How can one distinguish between when a da'ee is calling to Allāh and when they are calling to themselves?

Sheikh Ṣāliḥ Al-Fawzān ḥafidhahullāh said:
«...فبعض الناس، إذا لم يُمدَح ويُشَجَّع ترك الدعوة، وهذا دليل على أنه لا يدعو إلى الله، وإنما يدعو إلى نفسه...»
"...Some people, when they are not praised or encouraged, stop giving Da’wah. This is evidence that they are not calling to Allāh, but rather calling to themselves..."
