Masjids Belong to Allah Alone and Are Not the Private Property of Any Individual, Family, Committee, or Group

Allah declares that the masjids belong to Him:
﴿وَأَنَّ ٱلْمَسَـٰجِدَ للهِ فَلَا تَدْعُوا۟ مَعَ ٱللهِ أَحَدًا﴾
"And the masjids are for Allah, so do not invoke anyone along with Allah." [Surah Al-Jinn 72:18]
This āyah establishes that the purpose and ultimate ownership of every masjid belong to Allah alone.
Ownership in a legal sense—such as holding the title deeds or administering a waqf (endowment)—does not grant anyone the right to treat a masjid as personal property or to prevent Muslims from benefitting from it without a valid Shar'i reason.
Likewise, building a masjid does not make it one's personal property. The builder(s) receive the reward, but not perpetual personal control over Allah's House.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
«مَنْ بَنَى للهِ مَسْجِدًا يَبْتَغِي بِهِ وَجْهَ اللهِ بَنَى اللهُ لَهُ مِثْلَهُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ»
"Whoever builds a masjid for Allah, seeking thereby the Face of Allah, Allah will build for him a similar house in Paradise." [Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim]
Once a masjid has been established as a waqf, it ceases to be personal property and becomes dedicated to the worship of Allah.
This means that it cannot be inherited, sold as personal property, or treated as belonging to the founder or the founder's family.
The founder's reward continues, but the masjid itself remains an endowment dedicated to Allah for the benefit of the Muslims.
Preventing Muslims from Allah's Masjids Is a Grave Matter
Allah says:
"And who is more unjust than one who prevents Allah's name from being mentioned in His masjids and strives for their destruction?" [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:114]
This does not mean that anyone may enter a masjid and do whatever they wish. The masjid must be protected from innovations, disorder, and activities contrary to the Qur'an and Sunnah. However, excluding Muslims cannot be based on personal ownership, tribal affiliation, ethnicity, or organisational rivalry.
Masjids Must Unite the Muslims!
Allah commanded concerning Masjid ad-Dirār:
«﴿لَا تَقُمْ فِيهِ أَبَدًا﴾
"Never stand therein." [Surah At-Tawbah 9:108]
Masjid ad-Dirār was established to divide the Muslims rather than unite them.
Therefore, masjids should unite the people upon the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah—not become the property or symbol of individuals, families, committees, or factions.
The Role of the Masjid Management
Those who manage a masjid are trustees, not owners. They are entrusted with maintaining the masjid, organising its affairs, and serving the interests of the Muslims in accordance with the Sharī'ah.
Their responsibility is one of stewardship, not ownership. They do not own the masjid, nor do they possess unrestricted authority over it.
