Al-’Izz Ibn ’Abdis-Salām (D. 660H) said: «وَالْغَالِب أن الْحَسَد لَا يَقع إِلَّا بَين المشتركين في فَضِيلَة من الْفَضَائِل أو فِي شَيْء من الْأَسْبَاب الدُّنْيَوِيَّة فَلَا يخسد الْفَقِيه النّخوِيَ وَلَا التَّاجِر الجمال وَلَا الصَّانع الْبَقَال ومن أسباب الْحَسَد التجاوز وَلذَلِك أمر عمر رَضِي الله تَعَالَى عنه الأقارب أن يتزاوروا وَلَا يتجاوروا» "Envy typically arises between people who share a particular virtue or are involved in similar worldly matters. For instance, a jurist does not envy a grammarian, nor does a merchant envy a camel driver, and a craftsman does not envy a grocer. One of the causes of envy is close proximity, which is why 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) advised relatives to visit each other, but not to live too near one another."
