Imām Aḥmad ibn Aṣram ibn Khuzaymah Al-Maghaffali raḥimahullāh [D. 285 AH] said:

«إذا رأيت الأنباري يحب أبا جعفر الحذاء ومثنى بن جامع الأنباري فاعلم أنه صاحب سنة» "If you see an Anbari who loves Abū Ja’far Al-Hadhdhā' and Muthannā ibn Jāmi’ Al-Anbari, then know that he is a man of Sunnah." Imām ’Abdurraḥmān ibn Mahdi raḥimahullāh [D. 298 AH] said: «إذا رأيت حجازيا يحب مالك بن أنس فهو صاحب سنه. وفي حديث محمد بن مسلم إذا رأيت المديني يحب مالكا» "If you see a Hijazi who loves Mālik ibn Anas, then he is a man of Sunnah. In the narration of Muḥammad ibn Muslim, if you see a Madani who loves Mālik..." Abū Muḥammad Ibn Abī Ḥātim Ar-Rāzi raḥimahullāh [D. 327 AH] said: «باب استحقاق السنة محبي حماد بن زيد، حدثنا أبي ومحمد بن مسلم قالا سمعنا حماد بن زاذان قال سمعت عبد الرحمن بن مهدى يقول: إذا رأيت بصريا يحب حماد بن زيد فهو صاحب سنة» "Chapter on the worthiness of (ascribing) those who love Ḥammād ibn Zayd to the Sunnah: My father and Muḥammad bin Muslim narrated to us that they heard Ḥammād bin Zādhān say: I heard ’Abdurraḥmān ibn Mahdi say: 'If you see a Basri who loves Ḥammād ibn Zayd, then he is a man of Sunnah.'" Abū Aḥmad Al-Ḥākim raḥimahullāh [D. 378 AH] said: «وإذا رأيت الرجل يحب سفيان الثوري ومالك بن أنس وأيوب السختياني وعبد الله بن عون ويونس بن عبيد وسليمان التيمي وشريكا وأبا الأحوص والفضيل بن عياض وسفيان بن عيينة والليث بن سعد وابن المبارك ووكيع بن الجراح ويحيى بن سعيد وعبد الرحمن بن مهدي ويحيى بن يحيى وأحمد بن حنبل وإسحاق بن راهويه فاعلم أنه على الطريق ، وإذا رأيت الرجل يقول هؤلاء الشكاك فاحذروه فإنه على غير الطريق» "If you see a man who loves Sufyān Ath-Thawri, Mālik ibn Anas, Ayyūb As-Sikhtiyāni, ’Abdullāh ibn ’Awn, Yūnus ibn ’Ubayd, Sulaymān At-Taymi, Shareek, Abū Al-Aḥwaṣ, Al-Fuḍhayl ibn ’Iyāḍh, Sufyān ibn ’Uyaynah, Al-Layth ibn Sa’d, Ibn Mubārak, Wakee’ ibn Al-Jarrāh, Yaḥya ibn Sa’eed, ’Abdurrḥmān ibn Mahdi, Yaḥya ibn Yaḥyā, Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, and Is-ḥāq ibn Rāhawayh, then know that he is on the right path. But if you see a man speaking ill of these individuals, beware of him, for he is not on the right path." Abū ’Abdullāh Ibn Baṭṭah raḥimahullāh [D. 387 AH] said: «إذا رأيت العكبري يحب أبا حفص بن رجاء فاعلم أنه صاحب سنة» "If you see an 'Ukburi who loves Abu Ḥafs ibn Rajā', then know that he is a man of the Sunnah." After citing the above Āthār (notice the time difference), Sheikh Rabee’ Al-Madkhali waffaqahullāh went on to say: فهذا منهج شائع وحق معروف ومنتشر بين أهل السنة وسيف مسلول على أهل البدع ومن علامات أهل البدع إنكاره وعيبهم أهل السنة وطعنهم به، فإذا سمعت رجلاً يعيب به أهل السنة فاعلم أنه من أهل الأهواء والبدع إلا أن يكون جاهلاً فعلمه وبين له أن هذا الامتحان لأهل الأهواء أمر مشروع دل عليه الكتاب والسنة وعمل به السلف، ولا يقلق منه ويُعيِّر به إلا أهل البدع؛ لأنه يفضحهم ويكشف ما ينطوون عليه من البدع. "This is a well-known methodology, a recognised truth widely accepted among Ahlus-Sunnah, and a sword unsheathed against the people of innovation. One of the signs of the people of innovation is their denial of this practice, their criticism of the people of the Sunnah, and their attack on this principle. Therefore, if you hear someone criticising the people of the Sunnah for this, know that he belongs to the people of desires and innovation, unless he is ignorant. In that case, teach him and explain that this testing of the people of desires is a legitimate practice, supported by the Qur'ān, Sunnah, and the actions of the early generations. Only the people of innovation are disturbed by it and disparage it, for it exposes them and reveals the innovations they conceal." Article dated: 25/8/1433
