Testing People To See What They're Upon (Whenever The Need Arises) Is A Salafi Practice!

Al-Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ ibn Ḥayy [D. 169] said: «كنا إذا أردنا أن نكتب عن الرجل سألنا عنه، حتى يقال: أتريدون أن تزوجوه؟» "Whenever we intended to write [ḥadīth] from a man, we would inquire about him thoroughly, to the point where people would ask, 'Do you want to marry him off?'" Imām Aḥmad ibn ’Abdullāh ibn Yūnus raḥimahullāh [D. 227 AH] said: «امتحن أهل الموصل بمعافى بن عمران فإن أحبوه فهم أهل السنة وإن أبغضوه فهم أهل بدعة كما يمتحن أهل الكوفة بيحيى» "Test the people of Mosul with Mu’āfā ibn ’Imrān; if they love him, then they are people of Sunnah, but if they dislike him, they are people of innovation. Similarly, the people of Kūfā are tested by their stance towards Yaḥyā." Imām Nu’aym ibn Ḥammād raḥimahullāh [D. 228 AH] said: «إذا رأيت العراقي يتكلم في أحمد بن حنبل فاتهمه في دينه، وإذا رأيت الخراساني يتكلم في إسحاق بن راهويه فاتهمه في دينه وإذا رأيت البصري يتكلم في وهب بن جرير فاتهمه في دينه» "If you see an Iraqi speaking ill of Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, then be suspicious of his Deen. If you see a Khurāsāni speaking ill of Is-ḥāq ibn Rāhawayh, then be suspicious of his Deen. And if you see a Basran speaking ill of Wahb ibn Jarīr, then be suspicious of his Deen." Ja’far ibn Abī ’Uthmān Aṭ-Ṭayālisi said: I heard Yaḥyā ibn Ma’een raḥimahullāh [D. 233 AH] say: «إذا رأيت الرجل يتكلم في حماد بن سلمة وعكرمة مولى ابن عباس فاتهمه على الإسلام» "If you see a man speaking ill of Ḥammād ibn Salamah or ’Ikrimah, the freed slave of Ibn ’Abbās, then suspect his Islam." Imām ’Ali ibn Al-Madīni raḥimahullāh [D. 234 AH] said in his 'Aqeedah': «وإذا رأيت الرجل يحب أبا هريرة ويدعو له ويترحم عليه فارج خيره واعلم أنه بريء من البدع وإذا رأيت الرجل يحب عمر بن عبد العزيز ويذكر محاسنه وينشرها فاعلم أن رواء ذلك خيرا إن شاء الله وإذا رأيت الرجل يعتمد من أهل البصرة على أيوب السختياني وابن عون ويونس والتيمي ويحبهم ويكثر ذكرهم والاقتداء بهم فارج خيره ثم من بعد هؤلاء حماد بن سلمة ومعاذ بن معاذ ووهب بن جرير، فإن هؤلاء محنة أهل البدع، وإذا رأيت الرجل من أهل الكوفة يعتمد على طلحة بن مصرف وابن ابجر وابن حيان التيمي ومالك بن مغول وسفيان بن سعيد الثوري وزايده فارجه ومن بعدهم عبد الله بن أدريس ومحمد بن عبيد وابن أبي عتبة والمحاربي فارجه» "If you see a man who loves Abū Hurairah, prays for him, and invokes mercy upon him, then expect good from him and know that he is free from innovations. If you see a man who loves ’Umar ibn ’Abdul ’Azīz, speaks of his virtues, and spreads them, then be assured there is goodness behind that, in-shā-Allāh. And if you see a man from Basra following Ayūb As-Sikhtiyāni, Ibn ’Awn, Yūnus At-Taymi, loves them, frequently mentions them, and emulates them, then expect good from him. After the aforementioned, look to Ḥammād ibn Salamah, Mu’ādh ibn Mu’ādh, and Wahb ibn Jarīr, as these are a test for the people of innovation. Likewise, if you see a man from Kufa who follows Ṭalhah ibn Musarrif, Ibn Abi Ja’far, Ibn Ḥayyān At-Taymi, Mālik ibn Mighwal, Sufyān ibn Sa’eed Ath-Thawri, and Zā'idah, then expect good from him. After them, look to ’Abdullāh ibn Idrīs, Muḥammad ibn ’Ubayd, Ibn Abi ’Utbah, and Al-Muḥāribi, and expect good from him as well." Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal raḥimahullāh [D. 241 AH] said: «إذا رأيت الرجل ينال من حماد بن سلمة فاتهمه على الإسلام» "If you see a man speaking ill of Ḥammād ibn Salamah, then suspect his Islam." Imām Al-Bukhāri raḥimahullāh [D. 256 AH] said: «قال عبيد الله بن سعيد سمعت عبد الرحمن بن مهدي يقول في حديث ذكره وإذا رأيت الكوفي يذكر مالك بن مغول فاطمئن إليه» "Ubaydullāh ibn Sa’eed reported that he heard ’Abdurraḥmān ibn Mahdi say regarding a particular ḥadīth: 'If you see a man from Kūfa speaking well of Mālik ibn Mighwal, then be at ease regarding him.'" Imām Abū Ḥātim Ar-Rāzi raḥimahullāh [277 AH] said: «إذا رأيت الرازي وغيره يبغض أبا زرعة فاعلم أنه مبتدع» "If you see a Rāzi or anyone else having hatred for Abū Zur’ah, then know that he is an innovator."
