Sheikh Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ Al-’Uthaymīn: Firstly, we address your father. It is his duty to help you marry, especially if Allāh has blessed him with sufficient means, and you are not financially able to do so on your own. According to the Sharī‘ah, he is obligated to assist you in this matter, and he will be held accountable by Allāh for fulfilling this duty. If your father does not fulfill this obligation, then you are not at fault for seeking work elsewhere to support yourself and pursue a life of chastity, even if he forbids you from doing so. In this case, he would be wrong on two counts: first, for not fulfilling his duty to help you get married, and second, for preventing you from exercising your right to seek sustenance and a means to chastity. Therefore, if, as you have stated, you have been denied both marriage and the opportunity to seek work, there is no harm in traveling to find employment in order to support yourself and maintain your chastity, even if it means disobeying your father. Such disobedience will not harm you, as he has no legitimate right to prevent you in this matter.
