عن قتادة قال بلغنا أن أبا الدرداء نظر إلى رجل يضحك في جنازة فقال: أما كان فيما رأيت من هول الميت ما شغلك عن الضحك؟!
Qatādah said: it has reached us that Abu Ad-Dardā' once saw a man laughing during a Janāzah so he said, "Was what you witnessed of the shock of the deceased not enough to keep you from laughing?!"
وعن عن رجل من ولد الحسن قال: شهدنا مع الحسن جنازة فرأى رجلا يحدث صاحبه ويتبسم إليه، فقال: يا سبحان الله أما كان في الذي بين يدك مشتغل عن التبسم.
قال الحسن: كانوا يعظمون الموت أن يرفع عنده.
A man from the descendants of Hasan reported that they attended a funeral with Hasan, and he saw a man speaking to his companion and smiling at him. Hasan said, "SubhanAllah, was there not enough in what lies before you to occupy you from smiling?!"
Hasan said, "They used to revere death to the extent that they would not raise their voices in its presence."

رأى عبد الله بن مسعود رجلا يضحك في جنازة فقال: "أتضحك وأنت تتبع جنازة، والله لا أكلمك أبدا".
'Abdullāh ibn Mas'ood saw a man laughing during a funeral procession and said, "Do you laugh during a Janāzah? By Allāh, I will never speak to you again!"
