You won't know how sweet something is until you've tasted its bitter opposite

"From the perfection of Allāh's kindness—exalted be He—is that He causes His servant to taste the bitterness of being broken before granting him the sweetness of being mended. Just as when He, Glorified and Exalted, intended to complete Adam's enjoyment of Paradise, He first made him taste the bitterness of being expelled from it and endure the hardships of this world, which is a mixture of ease and difficulty. Thus, He does not break His believing servant except to mend him, nor does He withhold from him except to give to him, nor does He test him except to heal him, nor does He cause him to die except to bring him to life, nor does He make this world bitter for him except to make him long for the Hereafter, and He does not afflict him with the harshness of people except to draw him back to Himself."
