Questioner: Can I establish some sort of business for the person I intend to hand my Zakah to? I believe this would be more beneficial to them as it will be a means for then to generate a regular income. Answer: Sheikh Uthaymeen raḥimahullāh said: «زكاة الدراهم لابد أن تكون دراهم، ولا تخرج من أعيان أخرى إلا إذا وكلك الفقير فقال: إن جاءك لي دراهم فاشتر لي بها كذا وكذا، فلا بأس» "Zakah on dirhams (money) must be paid in dirhams (money) and should not be given in the form of other goods, except if the needy person authorises you to do so, saying: "If you receive dirhams on my behalf, please buy such-and-such for me with them." In this case, it is permissible. [مجموع فتاوى ورسائل ابن عثيمين (18/303)] He was asked on another occasion if it is permissible to convert Zakah into food items and other goods to be distributed to the poor. He replied: «لا يجوز، الزكاة لا بد أن تدفع دراهم» "It is not permissible; zakat must be paid in dirhams." [اللقاء الشهري (41 /12)]
