It was said to Al-Hasan Al-Basri: "Does a believer envy his brother?" He replied, "May you have no father! Have you forgotten the brothers of Yusuf?" It was also said, "If you want to be safe from an envious person, conceal your affairs from him." It is also said, "When Allāh wants to afflict His servant with an enemy who shows no mercy, He afflicts him with an envious person." Al-Aḥnaf said, "There is no friend for a tedious person, no loyalty for a liar, no peace of mind for an envious person, no nobility for a miser, and no leadership for a person of bad character." Some have said: "Envy was the first sin by which Allah was disobeyed in heaven; referring to Iblees envying Adam, and the first sin by which Allah was disobeyed on earth; referring to the son of Adam envying his brother up until he killed him."
