Question: How can one know that Allah has accepted their repentance? Are there any signs of this?
Sheikh Yahya Al-Hajoori ḥafidhahullāh responds:
It is obligatory upon you to repent from every sin, and Allah will accept your repentance.
{إِنَّمَا یَتَقَبَّلُ ٱللهُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ}
"Allah only accepts from the righteous." [Surah Al-Māʾidah: 27]
He is "At-Tawwāb" (The Accepter of Repentance), as His name signifies. Allah is the Accepter of Repentance and The Ever Merciful. You should believe that if you repent sincerely, Allah will accept your repentance.
{وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِی یَقۡبَلُ ٱلتَّوۡبَةَ عَنۡ عِبَادِهِۦ وَیَعۡفُوا۟ عَنِ ٱلسَّیِّـَٔاتِ وَیَعۡلَمُ مَا تَفۡعَلُونَ}
"And it is He who accepts repentance from His servants and pardons misdeeds, and He knows what you do." [Surah Ash-Shūrā: 25]
The signs of [a person's repentance being accepted] include:
▪️an increase in one's Eman,
▪️a feeling of relief in the heart,
▪️increasing in repentance,
▪️feeling remorseful for the sin one has committed,
▪️ being determined not to return to it,
▪️feeling sad when recalling the sin, and not being joyful that one has disobeyed Allah Almighty; this remorse is part of repentance. True repentance involves regret and abstaining from sin,
▪️Abstaining from the sin thereafter is also a sign that Allah has accepted one's repentance, as it is from the conditions of repentance; to give up the sin, resolve not to return to it, feeling remorse for having committed it, rectifying the wrongs, and ensuring the repentance occurs before the sun rises from the west. The repentance must be sincere and solely for Allah's sake, with the servant being truthful in his repentance.
If the conditions of repentance are met, including restoring the rights of others if necessary, Allāh will accept the repentance.
