Sheikh Rashād Adh-Dhali'ee hafidahullah responds:
"It has been authentically reported from the Prophet ﷺ that he said, "The best type of fast after the obligatory fast is fasting the month of Allah Al-Muharram."
So, fasting during the month of Allah Al-Muharram is the best fast after the obligatory fast. Also, during Muharram, there is the day of Ashura (10th of Muharram), which is recommended to fast. It is also recommended to fast on the ninth; the day before it.
A person should fast as much as they can. If they fast every other day, this is virtuous. If they fast on Mondays and Thursdays or fasts for several days continually and then stop fasting for a few days according to their ability. Fasting during this month holds a greater virtue than fasting on other days of the year."

NOTE: One should not fast the entire month, as the Prophet ﷺ did not complete the fasting of any month except Ramadhan.
