Does it apply if one prays alone, and is it confined to obligatory prayers? Ibn Qudāmah raḥimahullāh states concerning the issue of reciting Takbīr after the obligatory prayers (issue 1433): "One continues to say Takbīr after each obligatory prayer performed in congregation. According to Abū Abdullāh (Imām Aḥmad), may Allāh have mercy on him, the Takbīr is recited after the obligatory prayers even if one is praying alone, up until 'Aṣr prayer on the last day of Tashreeqīq, after which it is discontinued. Our Imām, may Allah have mercy on him, recommended saying the Takbīr after the obligatory prayers offered in congregation, as per the well-known narration from him. Al-Athram said: I asked 'Abdullāh if I should follow the practice of Ibn 'Umar, who did not say the Takbīr when praying alone. Aḥmad replied: Yes. Ibn Mas'ūd said: The Takbīr is only for those who pray in congregation. This is also the view of Ath-Thawri and Abū Ḥanīfah. Mālik said: The Takbīr is not recited after voluntary prayers, but it is recited after all obligatory prayers. Ash-Shāfi'ē said: The Takbīr is recited after every prayer, whether obligatory or voluntary, whether prayed alone or in congregation, because it is a prayer that has been performed, so the Takbīr is recited after it, just like the obligatory prayer in congregation. We adhere to the opinion of Ibn Mas'ūd and the practice of Ibn 'Umar, and there is no known disagreement among the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, thus constituting a consensus."
