Narrated 'Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
((مَنِ الْتَمَسَ رِضَى اللهِ بِسَخَطِ النَّاسِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ وَأَرْضَى النَّاسَ عَنْهُ، وَمَنِ الْتَمَسَ رِضَا النَّاسِ بِسَخَطِ اللهِ سَخَطَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَأَسْخَطَ عليه الناس)).
"Whoever seeks Allah's pleasure at the cost of people's displeasure, Allah will be pleased with him and make the people pleased with him. And whoever seeks to please the people at the cost of Allah's displeasure, Allah will be displeased with him and make the people displeased with him."
[Reported by Ibn Hibban in his Sahih and At-Tirmidhi (2414) with a slightly different wording]
NOTE: There is a difference of opinion regarding whether this hadith is directly attributed to the Prophet ﷺ or Mawqoof/stopped at 'Aishah. Imam al-Bukhari, as mentioned in "Al-'Ilal al-Kabir" by al-Tirmidhi (332), along with Abu Zur'a and Abu Hatim, as mentioned in "Al-'Ilal" by Ibn Abi Hatim (5/59), and others have authenticated it as a statement of 'Aishah. Ad-Daraqutni, may Allah have mercy on him, stated: "Its attribution to the Prophet is not established." This is mentioned in "Al-'Ilal" (14/182).
Sheikh Albani authenticated the hadith in "Silsilat Al-Ahadith As-Sahihah" (5/392).
Likewise, Sheikh Yahya concluded that even if the hadith is mawqoof to Aishah, the meaning is authentic - as proven by other evidences ⤵️
