An excellent example for those torn between obeying Allah and obeying their parents

Excerpt from Sheikh Rashād Adh-Dhali'ee's khutbah on the virtues of Abu Ishaq Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas رضي الله عنه The Sheikh ḥafidhahullāh says: "It is narrated in Sahih Al-Bukhari that Sa'd, may Allah be pleased with him, said, "No one accepted Islam except on the day I accepted it. I remained for seven days while I constituted one-third of Islam." The scholars explained, this means he was the third man to embrace Islam; there were Abu Bakr, the Prophet ﷺ, and Sa'd, may Allah be pleased with him. This does not contradict the reports that Khadijah or Bilal had accepted Islam earlier, as the intent here is from the free men. There were others who converted before Sa'd, including Khadijah, may Allah be pleased with her, but Sa'd was among the first free men to embrace Islam. Thus, he said, "I remained for seven days while I constituted one-third of Islam," meaning that there were no other free men who were Muslim besides him, Abu Bakr, and the Prophet ﷺ. When Sa'd embraced Islam, as narrated in Sahih Muslim, his mother said, "Do you not claim that Allah has commanded you to be dutiful to your parents?" He replied, "Yes." She said, "By Allah, I will not eat or drink until you renounce the religion of Muhammad." She remained without eating or drinking for three days until she fainted. Her other son began to give her water, and she invoked curses upon Sa'd. Then Allah revealed the Ayah: {وإن جاهداك على أن تشرك بي ما ليس لك به علم فلا تطعهما} "But if they strive to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness" (Qur'an 31:15). Thus Allah commanded good companionship with parents but prohibited obeying them in associating partners with Him. Sa'd then told his mother, as narrated by Aṭ-Ṭabarāni, "By Allah, mother, if you had ten souls and they left one by one, I would not renounce the religion of Muhammad ﷺ." Allah strengthened his resolve in Islam despite the emotional challenge of opposing his mother. He prioritised this Deen and he became one of the first to embrace Islām and among the earliest supporters of the Prophet ﷺ, so much so that he was from those whom the Prophet ﷺ was pleased with at time of his death. As narrated in Sahih Al-Bukhari, it was said to 'Umar [after his stabbing] appoint a successor, so he said "I don't know anyone to hand over to better than these six men whom the Prophet ﷺ was pleased with at the time of his death, and he mentioned 'Uthman, 'Ali, Talha, Az-Zubair, Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, and 'Abdur-Rahman ibn 'Awf, may Allah be pleased with them all."
