𝗔𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗯𝘀 & 𝗜𝗱𝗶𝗼𝗺𝘀 (45):

سَبَقَ السَّيْفُ العَذْلَ The sword preceded the reproach Meaning: the decision was made before deliberation and thought. Or, it is said to prevent excessive discussion on a matter and to avoid blaming or reproaching someone for carrying out a certain action. The term "العذل" refers to blame, reproach, and reprimand. This proverb is used for someone who tries to change something that has inevitably happened, or for someone who reconsiders a certain matter to no avail, indicating that the matter is settled and concluded. The origin of this proverb stems from Dubba ibn Add ibn Tabikha ibn Ilyas ibn Muḍar. The story behind this proverb is as follows: Dubba owned a herd of camels that he tended. He had two sons, one named Sa’d and the other named Sa’id. One night, Dubba noticed that the camels were scattering in all directions. He called his two sons and asked them to bring the camels back. The sons hurriedly went after the camels, each going in a different direction. By midnight, Sa’d had returned with the camels, but Sa’id did not return. Dubba searched for his son for a long time without finding any trace of him. One day, Dubba went to the Uqaz market for some need and saw a man wearing two cloaks that Dubba recognised. They were the cloaks his son Sa’id had been wearing when he left to retrieve the camels. Dubba approached the man, whose name was Al-Harith ibn Ka’b, and asked him about the cloaks. Al-Harith told him that a few days earlier he had encountered a young man, whom he described to Dubba, wearing the two cloaks. He had asked the young man to give him one of the cloaks, but the young man refused, so he killed him and took all his belongings, including his sword. Dubba realided in his heart that his son had been murdered treacherously. He asked Al-Harith to give him the sword because of its shine, which indicated its strength. Al-Harith, unaware that Dubba was the father of the slain young man, gave him the sword. Dubba then struck Al-Harith’s neck and killed him. People gathered and reproached Dubba, criticising him for killing someone during the sacred months.
