BENEFIT 108: Ruling on looking at a picture
QUESTIONER: We understand the evidence regarding the prohibition of creating pictures of living beings, but what is the ruling on looking at images of living beings? Does it reach the level of prohibition similar to that of creating the picture itself or is it less than that?
ANSWER (Sheikh Yahya Al-Hajuri حفظه الله):
"No, it does not reach the level of prohibition. The Prophet ﷺ saw the image of Ibrahim and Ismā'īl, I.e. a picture in the Ka'bah of them drawing lots of divination and he looked at it and said ﷺ, "They lied. By Allah, they (i.e. Abraham and Ismā'īl) never drew lots by these (divination)." Meaning, the idolaters who depicted that as if they had drew lots of divination. He ﷺ said, "By Allah, they did not do so." He established that the idolaters were lying in their action of depicting, and he looked at it. He looked at it and also looked at the statues and destroyed it. This means that looking at it...while disapproving of it, is not something sinful. Not unless the image itself is haraam, whereby one is forbidden to look at it, such as the image of a woman containing fitnah and so on. As for merely looking at the image of a person, it is not the same as creating an image."
