In another wording of the second report above [as found in Al-Mughni (2/259)], Muḥammad ibn Ziyād said:
فكانوا إذا رجعوا من العيد يقول بعضهم لبعض...
"When they returned from 'Eid, they would say to one another..."
As for extending congratulations before 'Eid by a day or more, this is incorrect and does not constitute a genuine 'Eid greeting because it is outside its proper time.
5. When replying, it is recommended to use the same phrase.
6. It's okay to shake hands and hug one another if done as a customary practice
Sheikh Uthaymeen rahimahullah said:
«هذه الأشياء لا بأس بها؛ لأن الناس لا يتخذونها على سبيل التعبد والتقرب إلى الله عز وجل، وإنما يتخذونها على سبيل العادة، والإكرام والاحترام، وما دامت عادة لم يرد الشرع بالنهي عنها فإن الأصل فيها الإباحة»
"These things are permissible because people do not adopt them as acts of worship or means of drawing closer to Allah Almighty, but rather as customary practices, acts of generosity, and respect. As long as they remain customary practices, there is no prohibition in the Shariah, the default ruling regarding them is permissibility." [Majmū' Fatwa Ash-Sheikh (16/209)]
7. To stay clear of Fitnah, it is advisable to refrain from extending congratulations to individuals of the opposite gender, and certainly to avoid shaking hands or embracing them.
