Use Your Knowledge to Honour Your Parents, Not to Disobey Them
When some people begin seeking knowledge and learn principles such as “there is no obedience to the creation in disobedience to the Creator,” they may start to carelessly disobey their parents.
Although this principle is correct, and we should not comply with anything that involves disobedience to Allah, we are still required to decline in a kind and respectful manner.
Reflect on the saying of Allah:
{فَلَا تُطِعۡهُمَاۖ وَصَاحِبۡهُمَا فِی ٱلدُّنۡیَا مَعۡرُوفࣰا}
“...do not obey them, but accompany them in this world with kindness…” [Surah Luqmān: 15]
If it's possible to fulfil their request while still remaining within the limits of Allah, then that is even better.
Sa‘eed ibn Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
«لَدَغَتْنِي عَقْرَبٌ فَأَقْسَمَتْ عَلَيَّ أُمِّي أَنْ أَسْتَرْقِيَ، فَأَعْطَيْتُ الرَّاقِي يَدِي الَّتِي لَمْ تُلْدَغْ، وَكَرِهْتُ أَنْ أُحْنِثَهَا»
“A scorpion stung me, and my mother swore that I must seek ruqyah. So, out of respect for her, I gave the raaqi my hand that had not been stung, and I disliked breaking her oath.” [Hilyat Al-Awliya (4/275)]
Meaning: Seeking ruqyah from others is generally disliked [https://t.me/ruqyachannel/59]. So when Sa‘eed ibn Jubayr was stung and his mother insisted that he seek ruqyah, he offered the hand that had not been stung. In this way, he maintained his tawakkul upon Allah and remained within the limits while still honouring his mother’s request.
