BENEFIT 50: It is disliked to have a non-Muslim woman breastfeed a Muslim child I asked Sheikh Yūsuf Al-Jazā'iri regarding kitābiyyāt who consume pork; do they become jallālah and is it permissible to have them breastfeed a Muslim child? He Answered: “The conclusion of this issue is that it is permissible, if there's a need, for a Christian or non-Muslim woman generally speaking, to breastfeed (a Muslim child); because the origin is permissibility and there is no evidence indicating prohibition, as stated by the scholars of the Standing Committee. A Christian breastfeeding woman is not given the ruling of Jallālah if she consumes pork, because pork undergoes istiḥālah (meaning it changes and disappears) after it is eaten. Ibn Baṭṭāl said (in the explanation of Ṣaḥīḥ Al-Bukhāri): “Suhnūn was asked about a sheep that was suckled by a sow (an adult female pig)? He said: There is no harm in eating it. Aṭ-Ṭabari said: The scholars are unanimously agreed that if a lamb or young goat is fed with the milk of a dog or a sow, it is not forbidden to eat it, and there is no disagreement that the milk of sows is as impure as feces. Others said: The underlying reason is that, after slaughtering, the milk of a sow is not perceived in the sheep via taste, smell, or odor; because Allah has transformed and changed it just as He causes food to change through digestion, for Allāh has only forbidden impurities that are perceived by the senses.” [end quote] But with the presence/availability of Muslim women; It is disliked for a non-Muslim woman to breastfeed the child, because the milk may affect the infant in several ways: 1- With regard to the transmission of bad characteristics through the milk; for indeed Allah Almighty has prohibited, through the tongue of His Prophet ﷺ, the consumption of wild animals with fangs...and one of the reasons for its prohibition is that some of its characteristics may be transmitted to those who eat their meat. 2- If this non-Muslim woman drinks a lot of alcohol; a percentage of this will be transmitted to the infant through milk. 3- It is feared that this non-Muslim woman, driven by severe hatred towards Muslims, may inflict harm on the infant in a concealed manner such that the effect of this harm is not apparent, thus causing harm to his hearing, sight, organs, or otherwise, especially if she gets drunk. And other such reasons. But in the case where getting hold of a Muslim wet nurse is not possible or difficult, and there's a need or necessity, it is permissible for a non-Muslim woman to breastfeed a Muslim child; because the interest in preserving the child’s life outweighs the feared and suspected harm. Ibn Qudāmah said in “Al-Mughni”: Abu Abdullah (meaning: Ahmad) disliked breastfeeding with the milk of immoral and polytheist women. [end quote] Ibn Qudamah said: It is disliked to breastfeed with the milk of a foolish woman so that the child does not resemble her in being foolish, for it is said: Breastfeeding changes one’s character. [end quote] Malik was asked, as in “Al-Mudawwanah,” about Christian wet nurses, and he said: “I don’t like taking them because they drink alcohol and eat pork; So he feared that they would feed his son from what they ate.
