How to Offer Salatul Janazah
Question:
Does the funeral prayer have an opening supplication (du’a Al-istiftah), and how is the funeral prayer performed?
Sheikh Rashad Adh-Dhali'ee:
There is no opening supplication in the funeral prayer. It begins with seeking refuge in Allah from Shaytan and saying Bismillah, then reciting Surah Al-Fatiha.
The funeral prayer is most commonly reported from the Prophet ﷺ as consisting of four takbirs (saying “Allahu Akbar”). It is also reported with five takbirs.
After the first takbir, one recites only Al-Fatiha.
After the second takbir, one sends blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ.
After the third takbir, one makes du’a for the deceased.
After the fourth takbir, one also makes du’a for the deceased, then ends the prayer with tasleem.
If one wishes, they may say a fifth takbir and then give tasleem after it.
All of this has been authentically reported from the Prophet ﷺ.
One may give one tasleem or two tasleems, as in regular prayer. It is mentioned in a narration from Ibn Mas’ud that the Prophet ﷺ would give salams in the funeral prayer as he does in regular prayer.
Some companions also used to give only one tasleem, and this is also authentically reported.
So if a person sometimes does it one way and sometimes another, there is no problem — all of it is permissible and established in the Sunnah.
Scholars also differed about raising the hands during the takbirs. Most scholars say one should raise the hands with each takbir, based on the report from Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), who used to raise his hands in the funeral prayer. Others said the hands should not be raised, because it was not specifically reported from the Prophet ﷺ, and if he had done so, it would have been transmitted to us.
