Anas -raḍhiyallāhu 'anhu- said:
The Prophet (ﷺ) was the best of all the people in character. I had a brother called Abu 'Umayr, who, I think, had been newly weaned. Whenever he was brought to the Prophet (ﷺ), the Prophet (ﷺ) would say,
‏((يَا أَبَا عُمَيْرٍ مَا فَعَلَ النُّغَيْرُ))
"O Abu 'Umayr! What happened to Nughayr?" It was a small bird which he used to play with.
[Reported by Bukhārī (6203) and Muslim (2150); and this is the wording of Bukhārī]
NOTE:
This ḥadīth is also reported by Abū Dāwūd, Tirmithi, Ibn Mājah and others with different wordings and some extra information.
___
9 BENEFITS DERIVED FROM THIS ḤADĪTH; as mentioned by Ibn Ḥajar in 'Fat-ḥul Bārī':
1⃣- the permissibility of assigning a Kunyah to someone with no children.
[Similarly, An-Nawawī mentioned in 'Sharḥ Muslim': “In this (ḥadīth) is proof for the permissibility of someone with no children to take on a kunyah as well as assigning a Kunyah to an infant, and that this is not considered a lie.”]
2⃣- the permissibility of a child playing with birds
3⃣- the permissibility of parents allowing their children to play with things that are allowable (in the Sharī'ah) for them to play with
4⃣- the permissibility of buying allowable things for children to play with
5⃣- the permissibility of housing birds in a cage or something similar, as well as trimming its wings; since Abu Umayr's bird must have been in one of these two conditions (i.e. Otherwise it would have flown away)
6⃣- the permissibility of someone taking a siesta in other than his wife's house, even if his wife is not present
7⃣- the permissibility of taking a siesta
8⃣- the permissibility of the ruler taking a siesta in the house of someone living under his rule; even that of a woman
9⃣- the permissibility of a man entering into the house of a non-mahram woman even while her husband is absent, so long as there's no cause for fitnah (and they are not alone).[1]
T.N:
[1] this is if the woman knows that her husband doesn't mind, otherwise it's not permissible for a woman to allow anyone into the house without her husband's permission; due to the ḥadīth of Abu Hurayrah:
((ولا تأذن في بيته إلا بإذنه))
"and she should not allow anyone to enter his house without his permission."
