BENEFIT 66: Swearing by other than Allāh is Shirk ٠ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ قَالَ: سَمِعَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ رَجُلاً يَحْلِفُ لاَ وَالْكَعْبَةِ فَقَالَ لَهُ ابْنُ عُمَرَ: إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: ‏((مَنْ حَلَفَ بِغَيْرِ اللهِ فَقَدْ أَشْرَكَ)).‏ [رواه أبو داود 3251 وصححه الألباني في "إرواء الغليل" (8/189)] Sa’d ibn ’Ubaydah said: Ibn ’Umar heard a man swearing: No, I swear by the Ka’bah. Ibn ’Umar said to him: I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ say: “Whoever swears by other than Allāh has committed Shirk.” NOTE: Sheikh Jum’ān mentioned (12 Jumādā Al-Ūlā 1444 H.) that Sheikh Muqbil included this ḥadīth in his collection "الأحاديث المعلة" (defective ḥadiths which are appear authentic). That is because Sa’d ibn ’Ubaydah did not hear from Ibn ’Umar. However, the ḥadīth is authentic from the route reported by Tirmithi. 3 Common examples of swearing by other than Allāh: I swear on my mum's life ❌ I swear by the ka'bah ❌ I swear by the Prophet's grave ❌ ... Sheikh ’Uthaymīn raḥimahullāh said: والحلف بغير الله شرك أكبر؛ إن اعتقد أن المحلوف به مساو لله تعالى في التعظيم والعظمة، وإلا ؛ فهو شرك أصغر. “Swearing by other than Allāh is major Shirk if one believes that the one sworn by is equal to Allāh Almighty in honour and greatness, otherwise it is minor shirk.” [Al-Qawl Al-Mufeed (2/214)] Sheikh Jum’ān ḥafidhahullāh mentioned in one of his after ’Aṣr classes, wherein he explains Sheikh Muqbil's "Al-Jāmi’ Aṣ-Ṣaḥīḥ": The expiation for swearing by other than Allāh is as follows: 1. Sincere repentance 2. Not to swear by anyone besides Allāh; i.e. - His Beautiful Names (eg. والله) - or His Divine Attributes (بِعزةِ الله) 3. To say لا إله إلا الله: عنْ أَبَي هُرَيْرَةَ رضي الله عنه قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: ‏((مَنْ حَلَفَ مِنْكُمْ فَقَالَ فِي حَلِفِهِ بِاللاَّتِ وَالْعُزَّى‏، فَلْيَقُلْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللهُ)). [متفق عليه] Narrated Abū Hurairah: Allāh's Messenger ﷺ said, “Whoever among you takes an oath wherein he says, 'By Al-Lat and Al-`Uzza (names of two Idols worshipped by the Pagans) he should say, 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah. * in some wordings it mentions the addition: لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللهُ [وحده لا شريك له له الملك وله الحمد وهو على كل شيء قدير] 4.
