I have a question, I wonder if you can answer it in shaa allah, and if you can’t can you direct me to someone who can? In the Hadith attached it’s mentioned that sorrow followed the man named sorrow right? Does this Hadith also apply for physical characteristics mathalan if you name a child tall for example then they grow to be tall as they age would it be wrong to say that (by the permission of Allah ‏عز وجل) the name may have effected them?
Narrated Al-Musayyab: That his father (Hazn bin Wahb) went to the Prophet (ﷺ) and the Prophet (ﷺ) asked (him), "What is your name?" He replied, "My name is Hazn (rough)." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "You are Sahl (ease)." Hazn said, "I will not change the name which my father has named me." Ibn Al-Musayyab added: We have had roughness (in character) ever since. Sa’eed ibn Al-Musayyab (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “We have had roughness (in character) ever since.” The difference between this and the forbidden omens (Tiyarah) is that with bad omens there is nothing perceivable to cause one to fear or be repulsed - not in its utterance nor in its appearance. Rather, it is only believed that when they occur in a specific way, the curse/bad luck takes affect and a person is prevented from fulfilling their objective, but that is not the case with these names, because they are hateful and ugly names; a person is repulsed when they are mentioned and when he hears them he is reminded of the scary meanings they carry. The name Ḥarb (war) for example reminds one of the fears connected to wars. Similarly, the name Murrah (bitter) is something hateful to the soul. The Prophet ﷺ like good Fa'l (optimism or the expectation that a event will occur by Allah's Permission), and it was reported from him that he said:
«ﺃﺣﺐ اﻟﻔﺄﻝ ﻗﻴﻞ ﻟﻪ ﻭﻣﺎ اﻟﻔﺄﻝ ﻗﺎﻝ اﻟﻜﻠﻤﺔ اﻟﺤﺴﻨﺔ»
“I like Al-Fa'l,” it was said to him: and what is Al-Fa'l? He said, “A good word (of optimism).” It is when one mentions/remembers the good that they hope for, so the soul becomes pleased with it, or perhaps it is the sense of giving good news of what Allāh Almighty has destined (i.e. expectation that a something good will occur by Allah's Permission). [An example of Fa'l is when] The Prophet ﷺ said on the day of Ḥudaybiyyah, Suhail ibn Umar has risen, so your affairs will be made easy for you (Suhail comes "Sahl", meaning ease), and it turned out as he ﷺ said.” [excerpt from Al-Muntaqa Sharhul Muwatta]
