He hafidhahullah was asked if it is permissible for one who is acquainted with the contraventions of these Jam'iyyaat to pay his Zakaat to them, so he answered: “Whoever donates his wealth to Jam'iyyaat falls into sin because he is fully aware of the harm (it causes) in splitting the Muslims. By Allah, it divided the salafis in Kuwait; it separated them in Sudan and it divided them in Yemen. Abul Hassan Al Misree and AbdurRahman AbdulKhaaliq did not become corrupt except because of Jam'iyyaat. And Abdullah As-Sabt, Muhammad Al Mahdi, Abdul Majeed Ar-Raymi, Muhammad Moosa Al Ba’daani, Aqeel Al-Maqtari and the signatories of bara’a adh-dhimah (freedom from responsibility) did not become corrupt except by following the ways of the Dunya, by the fitnah of Jam'iyyaat and collecting wealth.” [Refer to the book: “Charity organizations – A movement without blessing] Also, Sheikh Uthaymeen rahimahullah said: “It is better that one distributes their Zakah [to the eight categories of people mentioned in {Surah At-Tawbah: 60}] by himself, meaning he performs that himself for a number of reasons: 1: He is rewarded for his involvement in the distribution as this itself is an act of worship. 2: He fulfills the responsibility of paying Zakah with surety because sometimes the trustee may not take the issue of distributing Zakah as seriously [as you would yourself ] 3: He removes himself from criticism, especially if he is known to be rich; because people may not be aware that he has an appointed trustee [to distribute Zakah on his behalf], so they may criticise him and say: so and so does not pay Zakah.” [Sharh Al-Mumti’ (6/205)] Additionally, when a person distributes their Zakah themselves they can be sure that every penny goes directly to those who deserve it, in contrast to paying Zakah to a Jam'iyyah who take a cut (the amount of which varies from one Jam'iyyah to another) under the guise of (والعاملين عليها - those who oversea Zakah), or even worse, they may use the Zakah funds to further their own agendas, as we will clarify in part 4 Insha'Allah.
