PART 1: Establishing a charity organisation Definitions: There are three key terms that will be used in this series, so let us begin by defining these terms: The first term - "Charity": Charity (Ṣadaqah) in Arabic is a comprehensive term which includes all kinds of good. The Prophet ﷺ said: ((كل معروف صدقة)) “Every act of goodness is (considered) charity.” [Bukhāri 6021] Therefore, charity/Ṣadaqah is not confined to wealth, it is much broader than that, but in the context of this article 'charity' will involve some kind of giving; whether money, clothes, food, shelter or any other form of assistance to those who need it. • Islām encourages charity The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Every day two angels come down from Heaven and one of them says, 'O Allāh! Compensate every person who spends in Your Cause,' and the other says, 'O Allāh, bring destruction to one who withholds.'” [Bukhāri & Muslim] One day a sheep was slaughtered, so the Prophet ﷺ asked, “What remains of it?” ’Ā'ishah raḍhiyallāhu ’anhā said: “Nothing remains of it except its shoulder.” He ﷺ then said: “All of it remains except its shoulder.” [Tirmithi - graded Ṣaḥīḥ by Sheikh Muqbil in Dhamm Al-Mas'alah] Meaning, whatever a person gives in charity is what will be stored and be of benefit for him in the Hereafter. There are many, many more evidences from the Qur'ān & Sunnah. The second term is "organisation" (Tandhīm in Arabic): Cambridge dictionary defines organisation as: “a group of people who work together in an organised way for a shared purpose.” This definition is similar to that given in Arabic dictionaries. For example, in Al-Mu’jam Al-Wasīṭ it defines "organisation" (الجمعية) as: طائفة تتألف من أعضاء لغرض خاص وفكرة مشتركة. • There's nothing wrong with organisations in Islām per se. Sheikh Muqbil raḥimahullāh was accused of declaring all forms of organisations in Islām to be ḥarām, so he raḥimahullāh responded by saying: «أما التنظيم فتلك كتبي وأشرطتي فما حرمته يوماً من الدهر ، التنظيم الذي لا يخالف الكتاب والسنة، والتنظيم الذي يخالف الكتاب والسنة موضوع تحت الأقدام لأن النبي - صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم - يقول : " كل أمر الجاهلية موضوع تحت قدمي " كما في صحيح مسلم من حديث جابر. لكن الذي لا يخالف الكتاب والسنة فلا تصلح دعوة ولا جهاد ولا معيشة ولا تصلح أحوال الشخص مع أهل بيته إلا بتنظيم أموره وترتيب أحواله...» ”As for organisations, there are my books and tapes, I have never forbidden it at any point in time; the organisation that does not contradict the Book and the Sunnah. As for the organisation that contradicts the Book and the Sunnah then that goes under my feet, because the Prophet ﷺ says ﷺ: “Every matter of ignorance (Jahiliyyah) is laid under my feet,” as is recorded in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim from the ḥadīth of Jābir (raḍhiyallāhu ’anhu). However, that which does not contradict the Book and the Sunnah, then there is no way to uphold Da’wah, nor jihad, nor livelihood, nor the affairs of a person within his own household except through organising his affairs and setting his conditions straight...” [Ghārat Al-Ashriṭah (1 / 81 - 82)] Furthermore, Abū Mūsa Al-Ash’arī raḍhiyallāhu ’anhu reported that Allāh's Messenger ﷺ said: “When the Ash’ariyyūn (the tribe of Abū Mūsā Al-Ash’ari) run short of provision during Jihād, or the food of their families in Madeenah ran short, they would collect all the provisions they had in a sheet and then divide it equally among themselves. They are of me and I am of them.”
