EXPLANATION OF THE LĀMIYYAH OF IBN TAYMIYYAH (https://t.me/madrasatuna) LINE 16: فَـإِنِ اتَّـبَـعْـتَ سَـبِـيـلَـهُـمْ فُـمُـوَفَّـقٌ So if you follow their way, you will be successful وَإِنِ ابْـتَـدَعْـتَ فَـمَـا عَـلَـيْـكَ مُـعٌـوَّلُ but if you innovate, you will have no support 1. After clarifying his creed to the questioner and establishing to him that he is merely treading the path of the mountains of knowledge; the inheritors of the Prophet ﷺ; the righteous Predecessors and scholars of guidance, the author now leaves the questioner with some final words of advice. 2. And from these final words of advice, we extract a fundamental doctrine of Ahlus Sunnah wal jamā'ah; BELIEF 16: ᴡᴇ ᴍᴜsᴛ ᴀᴅʜᴇʀᴇ ᴛᴏ ᴛʜᴇ ᴡᴀʏ ᴏғ ᴛʜᴇ sᴀʟᴀғᴜṣ-Ṣᴀ̄ʟɪḥ (ᴛʜᴇ ᴘɪᴏᴜs ᴘʀᴇᴅᴇᴄᴇssᴏʀs) ᴀɴᴅ ᴀᴅᴏᴘᴛ ᴛʜᴇɪʀ ᴜɴᴅᴇʀsᴛᴀɴᴅɪɴɢ ᴏғ ᴛʜᴇ ϙᴜʀ'ᴀ̄ɴ ᴀɴᴅ sᴜɴɴᴀʜ 3. Who are the Salafuṣ-Ṣāliḥ? The term Salafuṣ-Ṣāliḥ (pious predecessors) refers to the first three generations of Muslims; namely, the Ṣaḥābah, those who came after them (tābi'ūn) and those who came after them (atbā' at-tābi'ūn). This definition is based on the saying of the Prophet ﷺ: ((خَيْرُ النَّاسِ قَرْنِي، ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ، ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ)) "The best of my Ummah is my generation (Qarnī), then those who come after them, then those who come after them." [Bukhāri and Muslim] NOTE: Anyone who adheres to the Qur'ān and Sunnah based on the understanding of the Salafuṣ-Ṣāliḥ is a SALAFI - even if he doesn't refer to himself as such; although, as Sheikhul Islām said: "There is no blame upon the one who manifests the way of the Salaf, and ascribes and affiliates himself to it (by saying: I am SALAFI)." [Majmū' Al-Fatāwā 4/149] BENEFIT: Salafiyyūn, Ahlus-Sunnah wal Jamā'ah, Ahlul-Ḥadīth (the people of ḥadīth), Ahlul-Athar (the people of narration), Al-firqatun Nājiyah (the saved sect), Aṭ-Ṭā'ifah Al-Manṣūrah (the victorious group); all of these names refer to the same meaning; following the Qur'ān and Sunnah based on the understanding of the Salafuṣ-Ṣāliḥ. 4. We must follow the way of the Salafuṣ-Ṣāliḥ because: (1) Allāh ﷻ commanded us: {وَالسَّابِقُونَ الْأَوَّلُونَ مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالْأَنْصَارِ وَالَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُمْ بِإِحْسَانٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا عَنْهُ} "As for the foremost—the first of the Emigrants and the Helpers—and those who follow them in goodness, Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him." [Sūrah At-Tawbah 100] (2) Allāh prohibited us from contradicting their way: {وَمَنْ يُشَاقِقِ الرَّسُولَ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُ الْهُدَىٰ وَيَتَّبِعْ غَيْرَ سَبِيلِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ نُوَلِّهِ مَا تَوَلَّىٰ وَنُصْلِهِ جَهَنَّمَ ۖ وَسَاءَتْ مَصِيرًا} "And whoever defies the Messenger after guidance has become clear to them and follows a path other than that of the believers, We will let them pursue what they have chosen, then burn them in Hell—what an evil end!" [Sūrah An-Nisā' 115] (3) The Prophet ﷺ instructed us on numerous occasions to follow their way; for example, in the famous ḥadīth where the Prophet ﷺ informed us that this Ummah will split into 73 sects, he ﷺ said: "All of them will be in the fire, except one", so when he was asked who the saved sect were, he ﷺ said: "They are the Jamā'ah (those who adhere to the truth)"; and in another wording, he ﷺ said: "Those who follow what I and my companions are upon today." 5. Also, in this line there is a stern warning against bid'ah and the people of bid'ah. What is bid'ah (innovation)? Anything that is introduced into the religion, contradictory to that which the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions were upon, through which a person seeks to draw close to Allāh ﷻ. The Prophet ﷺ warned against innovating into the religion: (1) It comes in the ḥadīth of 'Irbāḍh, that the Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever amongst you is granted long life will come to see much differences, so adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly guided Caliphs, and beware of newly invented matters, for every newly invented matter is an innovation, and every innovation is a misguidance".
