Shaykh Uthaymeen rahimahullah said: "The people of innovation in reality are not upon ijtihaad, because the person of Ijtihaad is one who is free from following his desires; he does not want anything except what is indicated by the Qur'aan and Sunnah, whereas we know that the people of innovation do not want that." [Sharhu Nathmul Waraqaat, page 207- 208, print: al-Ansaar] Similarly, Shaykh Zaid Al-Madkhali rahimahullah said: "It is not permissible for anyone to use the opinions of men to oppose the texts of the Book and Sunnah, rather whenever there is text it becomes obligatory to act upon that, and if there were to appear anything contrary to that from the opinions of men, it is not permissible to pay attention to that while making excuses for the Imaams of knowledge from the scholars of fiqh and hadith whenever they oppose the texts, because their opposition is not deliberate, rather it is only based on their Ijtihaad due to the texts not reaching them or other than that (from the excuses that are made for them)…however, this does not apply to the people of innovation because they have no excuse. I mean those who establish innovated principles and call people to that through writings or by any other means from the means of giving da'wah..." [Sharh Haa'iyah Ibn Abee Daawod , page 67, print: Al-Minhaaj]
