EXPLANATION OF THE
LĀMIYYAH OF IBN TAYMIYYAH
(https:/t.me/madrasatuna)
LINE 14:
and for every sane, living being in his grave
are deeds that will accompany him, and they will be questioned
1. In this line, the author mentions the belief of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamā'ah pertaining to the life of the grave, or to be more precise, the life of Al-Barzakh.
BELIEF 15:
ᴀʜʟᴜs sᴜɴɴᴀʜ ʙᴇʟɪᴇᴠᴇ ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ ᴛʀɪᴀʟ ᴏғ ᴛʜᴇ ɢʀᴀᴠᴇ ᴀs ᴡᴇʟʟ ᴀs ᴛʜᴇ ʙʟɪss ᴀɴᴅ ᴘᴜɴɪsʜᴍᴇɴᴛ ᴏғ ᴛʜᴇ ɢʀᴀᴠᴇ; ᴀɴᴅ ᴛʜᴇʏ ᴀғғɪʀᴍ ᴛʜᴀᴛ ɪɴ ɪᴛs ʟɪᴛᴇʀᴀʟ sᴇɴsᴇ.
NOTE:
Ibnul Qayyim, may Allāh have mercy on him said:
"It's important to note that the punishment of the grave refers to the punishment of the barzakh (the life after death), so whoever dies and is deserving of being punished will face his share of punishment regardless whether he is buried or not; even if he is eaten by a beast of prey, or burnt to ashes and his ashes is scattered in the air, or he is crucified, or drowns in the middle of the ocean; whatever the case, his soul and body will feel the same punishment as those buried in the graves."
[Kitāb Ar-Rūḥ 58]
2. The trial of the grave, as established in the Sunnah, refers to the questioning that will take place in the grave; that is, once a person dies, two angels will come to him in his grave and ask him three questions:
1. Who is your Lord?
2. Who is your prophet?
3. What is your religion?
And concerning this trial, Allāh ﷻ said:
{يُثَبِّتُ اللهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا بِالْقَوْلِ الثَّابِتِ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ ۖ وَيُضِلُّ اللهُ الظَّالِمِينَ ۚ وَيَفْعَلُ اللهُ مَا يَشَاءُ}
"Allāh makes the believers steadfast with the firm Word ˹of faith˺ in this worldly life and the Hereafter. And Allāh leaves the wrongdoers to stray. For Allāh does what He wills."
[Sūrat Ibrāhīm 27]
Al-barā' ibn 'Āzib, may Allāh be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
((نَزَلَتْ فِي عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ))
"It (i.e. this Āyah) was revealed concerning the punishment of the grave."
[Muslim 2871]
3. According to the lengthy ḥadīth of Al-Barā', those who will be questioned in their graves are of two categories:
The 1st: The believer
The 2nd: The disbeliever and hypocrite
As for the believer, he will answer correctly, saying:
1. Allāh is my Lord
2. Muḥammad is my prophet
3. Islām is my religion.
But the disbeliever and the hypocrite will say:
"Ha Ha I do not know...I heard the people saying something so I said the same."
This is the fitnah of the grave, and we ask Allāh to keep keep us firm upon the truth until we meet Him.
NOTE:
There are three categories of people who will be exempt from the trial of the grave:
(1) The Prophets and Messengers
The evidence for this is the ḥadīth of 'Ā'ishah, may Allāh be pleased with her, that the Prophet ﷺ said:
((فَبِي تُفْتَنُونَ ، وَعَنِّي تُسْأَلُونَ))
"You will be trialled with regards to me, and you will be questioned about me."
[Aḥmad 25089]
(2) The martyrs
The evidence for this is that when the Prophet ﷺ was asked, why will the believers be tested in their graves except the martyr? He ﷺ said:
"The flashing of swords above his head is enough of a trial."
[An-Nasā'ī; authenticated by Sheikh Albāni in 'Ṣaḥīḥ An-Nasā'ī' (1940)]
(3) The Murābiṭ (those who gaurd the Islamic frontiers against any the enemies)
The evidence for this is the ḥadīth of Salmān, may Allāh be pleased with him, that the Prophet ﷺ said:
((رِبَاطُ يَوْمٍ وَلَيْلَةٍ خَيْرٌ مِنْ صِيَامِ شَهْرٍ وَقِيَامِهِ، وَإِنْ مَاتَ جَرَى عَلَيْهِ عَمَلُهُ الَّذِي كَانَ يَعْمَلُهُ وَأُجْرِيَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقُهُ وَأَمِنَ الْفَتَّانَ))
"Observing ribāṭ (gaurding the Islamic frontier) for a day and a night is more virtuous than fasting for a whole month and standing in prayer in all its nights. And if a person dies (while performing this duty), his deeds will continue and he will go on receiving his reward for it perpetually and will be saved from the torture of the grave."
[Muslim 19
