BENEFIT 50: Juwairiyah ibn Asmā’
The Sanad (chain of narration) covered in today's Bukhāri class with Sheikh Jum’ān ḥafidhahullāh:
Muḥammad ibn Ismā’ēl Al-Bukhāri raḥimahullāh wrote in his Ṣaḥīḥ (ḥadīth no. 3104):
حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ،
حَدَّثَنَا جُوَيْرِيَةُ،
عَنْ نَافِعٍ،
عَنْ عَبْدِ الله
Benefits related to this Sanad:
1⃣. Mūsā ibn Ismā’ēl At-Tabūdhaki (التَّبُوذَكيّ)
• According to the people of Baṣrah, Tabūdhak is an ascription to somone who sells السماد (fertiliser). Others said it refers to someone who sells the abdomens of chickens and birds.
2⃣. Juwairiyah ibn Asmā' ibn ḥumaid
• Juwairiyah جويرية is commonly a female name, and the same for his father's name, Asmā' أسماء. However, in this case they are both male names. We know this from the addition of بن (son of) between the names. If these were female names we would have بنت (daughter of) instead of بن.
This shows the importance of having ibn/bint in our names. This was also the practice of the Salaf. But it has now been phased out due to Muslims imitating the Kuffār on a mass scale Maybe this is why the kuffar have issues identifying their gender!
Examples:
✅ ’Abbas ibn ’Umar ibn ’Ali
❌ ’Abbas ’Umar ’Ali
✅ Ṣafiyyah bint Aḥmad ibn Yūsuf
❌ Ṣafiyyah Aḥmad Yūsuf
Advice: Try and use the correct format as much as possible.
3⃣. Nafi’ (the freed slave of Ibn ’Umar) was from the scholars of Madīnah.
4⃣. ’Abdullāh
General Rule:
Whenever you find the name ’Abdullāh on its own (muhmalatan) without the mention of the father's name or any other description/ascription, it refers to: عبدالله بن مسعود
Exceptions to the rule:
• if the one narrating from him is from Makkah, then ’Abdullāh in this instance refers to: عبدالله بن عباس
• if the one narrating from him is from Madīnah, then ’Abdullāh in this instance refers to: عبدالله بن عمر
• if the one narrating from him is from Miṣr, then ’Abdullāh in this instance refers to: عبدالله بن عمرو بن العاص
____
These kind of rules are very helpful in distinguishing between the different narrators.
