’Umar ibn ‘Abdil-‘Azīz was reported to have said:
«قف حيث وقف القوم، فإنهم عن علم وقفوا، وببصر نافذ كفوا»
“Stop where the people stopped (i.e. the Ṣaḥābah), for they stopped based on knowledge and restrained themselves due to deep insight...”
[Ibn Rajab's Faḍl ‘Ilm as-Salaf, p. 36]
Likewise, Imām Al-Awzā’ē (D 157 AH) raḥimahullāh said:
«اصبر نفسك على السنة، وقف حيث وقف القوم، وقل بما قالوا، وكف عما كفوا عنه، واسلك سبيل سلفك الصالح، فانه يسعك ما وسعهم»
“Make yourself patient upon the Sunnah, stop where the people stopped, speak with what they spoke with, and refrain from what they refrained from. And follow the path of your Righteous Predecessors (Salaf Aṣ-Ṣāliḥ) for verily, sufficient for you is that which was sufficient for them.” [Related in Ash-Sharī’ah of Al-Ājurrī, p. 58]
