BENEFIT 45: I have a debt, can you help me? ’Ali raḍhiyallāhu ’anhu narrated that: “A Mukātib (a slave who agrees to buy himself out of servitude) came to him and said: “I am not capable of my Kitābah (buying myself out of servitude) so aid me.” He said: “Should I not teach you words that the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) taught me? If you had a debt upon you similar to the mountain of Ṣīr (in some books, Ṣabīr), Allāh would fulfill it for you. He said: ‘Say: ((اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلاَلِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ)) “O Allāh, suffice me with Your lawful against Your prohibited, and make me independent of all those besides You.” [Jāmi’ At-Tirmidhi (3563) - graded 'ḥasan' by Sheikh Albāni] This is how the believer should be; being dependent upon Allāh while seeking independence from the creation as much as possible. The Prophet ﷺ would take pledges of allegiance from some of his Companions on the basis that they do not to ask anyone for anything, so much so that the whip would drop from one of them while they were on their riding beast, and they would not ask anyone to hand it to them. Rather they would get down and pick it up themself. Yes, dependence on some people is indispensable in certain situations, however, this should not become a habit for a believer! How beautiful are the words of the poet: لاَ تَسْأَلَنَّ بُنَيَّ آدَمَ حَاجَةً * وَسَلِ الَّذِي أَبوَابُه لاَ تُحْجَبُ Do not ask the child of Ādam for anything * but ask the One Whose doors are always accessible اللهُ يَغْضَبُ إِن تَرَكْتَ سُؤَالَهُ * وَبُنَيَّ آدَمَ حِينَ يُسْأَلُ يَغْضَبُ Allāh gets angry when you stop asking Him * whereas the child of Ādam gets angry when he is asked
