BENEFIT 44: Were Yūsuf عليه السلام's brothers Prophets too?
Sheikh Yaḥyā ḥafidhahullāh said (paraphrasing):
The Prophets are free from major sins, so it's not possible that they (Yūsuf's brothers) were Prophets because they perpetrated a number of major sins‼️
The Sheikh gave the following examples:
1⃣. Envy:
﴿إِذۡ قَالُوا۟ لَیُوسُفُ وَأَخُوهُ أَحَبُّ إِلَىٰۤ أَبِینَا مِنَّا وَنَحۡنُ عُصۡبَةٌ﴾
“The brothers said [to each other], ‘Although we are many, Joseph and his brother are dearer to our father than we are...” [Sūrah Yūsuf: 8]
2⃣. Lack of respect for their father:
﴿إِنَّ أَبَانَا لَفِی ضَلَـٰلࣲ مُّبِینٍ﴾
“Really, our father is in a plain error.”
[Sūrah Yūsuf: 8]
3⃣. Lying:
﴿قَالُوا۟ یَـٰۤأَبَانَاۤ إِنَّا ذَهَبۡنَا نَسۡتَبِقُ وَتَرَكۡنَا یُوسُفَ عِندَ مَتَـٰعِنَا فَأَكَلَهُ ٱلذِّئۡبُۖ وَمَاۤ أَنتَ بِمُؤۡمِنࣲ لَّنَا وَلَوۡ كُنَّا صَـٰدِقِینَ﴾
“They said, ‘We went off racing one another, leaving Yūsuf behind with our things, and a wolf ate him. You will not believe us, though we are telling the truth!’ [Sūrah Yūsuf: 17-18]
4⃣. Deception:
﴿وَجَاۤءُو عَلَىٰ قَمِیصِهِۦ بِدَمࣲ كَذِبࣲ﴾
“And they showed him his shirt, deceptively stained with blood.” [Sūrah Yūsuf: 18]
5⃣. Cutting the ties of kinship
﴿ٱقۡتُلُوا۟ یُوسُفَ أَوِ ٱطۡرَحُوهُ أَرۡضࣰا یَخۡلُ لَكُمۡ وَجۡهُ أَبِیكُمۡ وَتَكُونُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِۦ قَوۡمࣰا صَـٰلِحِینَ﴾
“Kill Yūsuf or cast him out to some (other) land, so that the favour of your father may be given to you alone, then after that you may ˹repent and˺ become righteous people!” [Sūrah Yūsuf: 9]
...
He said: “As-Suyūṭī wrote a book on this subject and concluded with the same result (that they are not Prophets) and he used as evidence, the sins which they perpetrated.”
