BENEFIT 42: Important principle related to ’ilm Al-Ghayb (knowledge of the unseen): Sheikh ’Abdullāh Lamḥ Al-Akhawlāni ḥafidhahullāh said: PRINCIPLE: «الغيبيات التي لا تعلم إلا بالسمع إذا لم يرد فيها نص يحتج به: فليست مما كلفنا اعتقادها، والسؤال عنها غير مشروع» “The affairs of the unseen that are not known except through evidences, if there are no texts relayed concerning them that may be used as evidence, then: it is not something which we are required to believe in, nor is it legislated to ask concerning them.” The are many examples in the books of ’Aqīdah which attest to this principle. So if you are asked: “when a person dies, does the angel entrusted to him also die, or where does he go?” You should say: “This is from the matters of the unseen that are only known through evidence, and there is no authentic evidence that has come concerning this, so we have not been tasked with searching for this, and nothing stems from this in terms of action or belief. What's required of a Muslim is that he concerns himself with what will be of benefit to him and leave off delving into matters of the unseen which the evidences have remained silent concerning, for fear of extremism, because the Prophet ﷺ said: ((هلك المتنطعون)) 'Ruined are the extremists.' ”
