BENEFIT 41: Tawriyah v.s Taqiyyah
The following is a paraphrased answer given by our Sheikh, Yaḥyā ḥafidhahullāh concerning Tawriyah (equivocation):
“Tawriyah should only be resorted to when necessary (#), or else it falls into the Taqiyyah employed by the Shī’ah (i.e. manifesting that which is contrary to one's inward beliefs).
Examples of Tawriyah:
1⃣. Ibrāhīm عليه السلام's statement to his wife Sārah: “If these people come to know that you are my wife they will snatch you away from me, so if they ask you tell them that you are my sister and in fact you are my sister in Islām, and I do not know of any other Muslim in this land besides I and you.” [Muslim 2371]
2⃣. Ibrāhīm عليه السلام excused himself saying:
{‏إِنِّي سَقِيمٌ‏}‏ ”I am sick“
His people assumed that he was physically sick, although he was referring to emotional sickness; he became sick at the sight of his people worshipping statues which they had crafted with their own hands.
3⃣. Allāh's Messenger (ﷺ) arrived at Mādinah with Abū Bakr riding behind him on the same camel. Abū Bakr was a noble man known to the people (Sheikh Yaḥyā said, he was known to the people due to his business excursions), while Allāh's Messenger (ﷺ) was unknown (Sheikh Yaḥyā said, because he never used to leave Makkah). Thus, if a man met Abū Bakr, he would say, 'O Abū Bakr! Who is this man in front of you?' Abū Bakr would say, 'This man shows me the Way,' One would think that Abū Bakr meant the road, while in fact, Abū Bakr meant the way of virtue and good. [Bukhāri 3911]
4⃣. During the Fitnah of 'khalq Al-Qur'ān' (the false belief that the Qur'ān is created) under the caliphate of Al-Ma'mūn, some of the scholars who were be brought in for questioning would resort to Tawriyah in order to escape punishment. On one occasion, one of them said: “As for the Tawrāh, the Injīl, the Zabūr, and the Qur'ān, then they -raising his fingers up and intending his fingers- are all created (I.e. His fingers are created, not the aforementioned books, for they are the uncreated speech of Allāh).”
5⃣. Ibn Abī Laylā lived in Shām at a time when the Nāṣibah (those who bore hatred for Ahlul-Bayt) were rampant. To an extent that the Amīr forced him to curse ’Ali raḍhiyallāhu ’anhu during his Khuṭbah. So, at the end of the khuṭbah, he said: “The Amīr has commanded me to curse ’Ali, so send curse upon him (i.e. send curse upon the Amīr - not ’Ali, but no one understood him).”
Sheikh Yaḥyā commented: “It is not permissible to curse a Muslim, however in this case he was forced to choose between the lesser of the two evils (i.e. Curse ’Ali raḍhiyallāhu ’anhu or curse this wicked Amīr). That's if this occurrence is actually true.”

(#) On the day of judgement when the people plead with Ibrāhīm for him to intercede, he will excuse himself due to the three occasions where he performed Tawriyah [Bukhāri 4712]. Sheikh Yaḥyā said, this shows the seriousness of this matter and that Tawriyah should not be resorted to unless it's necessary.
