BENEFIT 37: Types of Hijrah (emigration)
Ibn Al-'Arabi (Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn ’Abdillāh) author of Aḥkām Al-Qur'ān said:
“Hijrah is of various types:
1⃣- Exiting from a non-Muslim land (Dār Al-Ḥarb) to a Muslim land (Dār Al-Islām). This was obligatory during the time of the Prophet ﷺ and will remain obligatory till the Day of Judgement...(Generally speaking) if one remains in non-Muslim lands he is sinful, but the (specific) ruling varies depending on one's condition.
2⃣- Exiting from a land where Bid’ah is prevalent.
Ibn Al-Qāsim said: I heard Mālik say:
«لا يحل لأحد أن يقيم بأرض يُسب فيها السلف»
“It is not permissible for anyone to reside in a land wherein the Salaf are reviled.”
Ibn Al-’Arabi commented:
“This is true because if you are unable to remove an evil (munkar) then you must remove yourself, as Allāh the Most High said:
{وَإِذَا رَأَیۡتَ ٱلَّذِینَ یَخُوضُونَ فِیۤ ءَایَـٰتِنَا فَأَعۡرِضۡ عَنۡهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ یَخُوضُوا۟ فِی حَدِیثٍ غَیۡرِهِۦۚ وَإِمَّا یُنسِیَنَّكَ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ فَلَا تَقۡعُدۡ بَعۡدَ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰ مَعَ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ}
“And when you come across those who ridicule Our revelations, do not sit with them unless they engage in a different topic. Should Satan make you forget, then once you remember, do not ˹continue to˺ sit with the wrongdoing people.” [Sūrah Al-An’ām: 68]
3⃣- Exiting a land that is overcome with Ḥarām, because seeking Ḥalāl (provision) is obligatory upon every Muslim.
4⃣- Fleeing from physical persecution. This is a blessing from Allāh which He has given as a concession, so if one fears for himself, Allāh has permitted him to exit therefrom and flee with his life in order to save himself from that danger. And the first person to ever do so was Ibrāhīm, peace be upon him; When he was afraid of his people he said:
{إِنِّی مُهَاجِرٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّیۤ}
”I will emigrate for the sake of my Lord.” [Sūrah Al-’Ankabūt: 26]
And he said:
{وَقَالَ إِنِّی ذَاهِبٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّی سَیَهۡدِینِ}
“Verily, I am going to my Lord. He will guide me!” [Sūrah As-Ṣāffāt: 99]
And Allāh ﷻ said concerning Mūsa:
{ فَخَرَجَ مِنۡهَا خَاۤىِٕفࣰا یَتَرَقَّبُ}
“So Mūsa left the city in a state of fear and caution.” [Sūrah Al-Qaṣaṣ: 21]
5⃣- Fearing illness by remaining in an unhealthy land, thus exiting to a more pleasant land. When Madīnah became unhealthy, the Prophet ﷺ permitted the shepherds to go out to the pastures (on the outskirts) until they had recovered, but he excluded from that exiting due to a plague...
6⃣- Fleeing for fear of financial persecution, because the sanctity of a Muslim's wealth is similar to that of his blood, and the [sanctity of his] family likewise is even more imperative.”
