“The preferred approach is for a man to spend in charity from what is surplus to his wealth and to save for himself provision for fear of being trialled with poverty, because he may be afflicted with regret for what he did, SO MUCH SO HIS REWARD WILL BE NULLIFIED and he becomes a burden upon the people. Moreover, the Prophet ﷺ did not reprimand Abū Bakr for giving away all his money due to what he knew of him in terms of strength of Yaqeen (certainty) and soundness in tawakkul (reliance); so he was not afraid of fitnah for him unlike others...”
The point being, regret after deciding to undertake a good deed may reduce a person's reward, if not completely nullify the deed.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
((عَلَيْكُمْ بِمَا تُطِيقُونَ، فَوَاللهِ لاَ يَمَلُّ اللهُ حَتَّى تَمَلُّوا))
“Do (good) deeds which is within your capacity as Allāh never gets tired of giving rewards till you get tired of doing good deeds.” [Bukhāri 43]
Therefore, one should not rush into making long term decisions at the peak of their Ēmān, because they may come to regret it when their Ēmān takes a dip - especially if this decision is irreversible.
One example of an irreversible long term decision which I feel some people rush into while at the peak of Éman, is the issue of Hijrah.
Before a person decides to make Hijrah, they should think very carefully. [Note: I don't intend the linguistic Hijrah, where one leaves one country and moves to another, rather what I intend is the legislative Hijrah which makes it Ḥarām for a person to return to the country they migrated from without necessity for more than three days.]
They should at least visit the country they intend to migrate to before taking the decision, settle down, see how things work, and then go on from there...
Don't get me wrong, Hijrah is a very noble act, however, it's not a decision to take lightly, and definitely not one to take instantaneously at the peak of one's Ēman!
🔺Note:
There are two matters related to Hijrah which many people conflate:
1⃣. Migrating from non-Muslim countries
2⃣. Intending Hijrah / becoming a Muhajir
The first matter is generally Wajib (see link https://t.me/madrasatuna/2107) while the second is not. This post is referring to the second matter, not the first ‼️
