EXPLANATION OF THE LĀMIYYAH OF IBN TAYMIYYAH (https://t.me/madrasatuna) LINE 12: Shaykhul Islām Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allāh be pleased with him, says: وَكَـذَا الِصِّـرَاطُ يُـمَـدُّ فَـوْقَ جَـهَـنَّـمٍ And (I also affirm) that the bridge will be laid over Hellfire فَـمُـسَـلَّـمٌ نَـاجٍ وَآخَـرُ يُـهْـمَـلُ So some will be saved and delivered, and others abandoned 1. In this line, the author mentions another affair from the affairs of the unseen, and the next phase that will take place on the Day of judgement after the reckoning and weighing. BELIEF 12: ᴀʜʟᴜs sᴜɴɴᴀʜ ᴀғғɪʀᴍ ᴛʜᴇ Ṣɪʀᴀ̄ṭ (ʙʀɪᴅɢᴇ); ᴀɴᴅ ᴛʜᴇʏ ʙᴇʟɪᴇᴠᴇ ɪᴛ ɪs ᴀ ᴘʜʏsɪᴄᴀʟ ʙʀɪᴅɢᴇ ᴡʜɪᴄʜ ᴡɪʟʟ ʙᴇ ʟᴀɪᴅ ᴀᴄʀᴏss ʜᴇʟʟғɪʀᴇ ᴏɴ ᴛʜᴇ ᴅᴀʏ ᴏғ ᴊᴜᴅɢᴇᴍᴇɴᴛ ғᴏʀ ᴘᴇᴏᴘʟᴇ ᴛᴏ ᴄʀᴏss; ᴘᴇᴏᴘʟᴇ ᴡɪʟʟ ᴄʀᴏss ᴛʜɪs ʙʀɪᴅɢᴇ ᴀᴛ ᴠᴀʀʏɪɴɢ sᴘᴇᴇᴅs ᴀᴄᴄᴏʀᴅɪɴɢ ᴛᴏ ᴛʜᴇɪʀ ᴅᴇᴇᴅs. 2. This belief is proven by the Qur'ān, the Sunnah, as well as the ijmā': As for the Qur'ān: Allāh ﷻ said: {وَإِن مِّنكُمۡ إِلَّا وَارِدُهَاۚ كَانَ عَلَىٰ رَبِّكَ حَتۡمࣰا مَّقۡضِیࣰّا ۝ ثُمَّ نُنَجِّی ٱلَّذِینَ ٱتَّقَوا۟ وَّنَذَرُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ فِیهَا جِثِیࣰّا} "There is none of you who will not pass over it (i.e. the Ṣirāṭ). ˹This is˺ a decree your Lord must fulfil. Then We shall save those who use to fear Allah and were dutiful to Him. And We shall leave the wrongdoers therein (humbled) to their knees (in Hell)." [Sūrah Maryam 71 - 72] As for the Sunnah: (1) On the authority of Abū Hurairah, may Allāh be pleased with him, that the Prophet ﷺ said: ((وَيُضْرَبُ الصِّرَاطُ بَيْنَ ظَهْرَىْ جَهَنَّمَ فَأَكُونُ أَنَا وَأُمَّتِي أَوَّلَ مَنْ يُجِيزُ، وَلاَ يَتَكَلَّمُ يَوْمَئِذٍ إِلاَّ الرُّسُلُ، وَدَعْوَى الرُّسُلِ يَوْمَئِذٍ: اللَّهُمَّ سَلِّمْ سَلِّمْ)) "The bridge will be set over the Hell; and I and my Ummah will be the first to pass over it; and none but the messengers will speak on that day, and the prayer of the messengers on that day will be: O Allāh! Keep us safe, keep us safe." [Bukhāri & Muslim] (2) Likewise, in the lengthy ḥadīth of Abū Sa'īd Al-Khudrī, the prophet ﷺ said: ((... قَالَ: ‏((دَحْضٌ مَزِلَّةٌ، فِيهِ خَطَاطِيفُ وَكَلاَلِيبُ وَحَسَكٌ تَكُونُ بِنَجْدٍ فِيهَا شُوَيْكَةٌ يُقَالُ لَهَا السَّعْدَانُ، فَيَمُرُّ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ كَطَرْفِ الْعَيْنِ وَكَالْبَرْقِ وَكَالرِّيحِ وَكَالطَّيْرِ وَكَأَجَاوِيدِ الْخَيْلِ وَالرِّكَابِ فَنَاجٍ مُسَلَّمٌ وَمَخْدُوشٌ مُرْسَلٌ وَمَكْدُوسٌ فِي نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ)) "The bridge will be set over the Hell and intercession will be allowed and they will say: O Allāh! Keep us safe, keep us safe. It was asked: O Messenger of Allāh, what is this bridge? He said: The void in which one Is likely to slip. There would be hooks, tongs, spits like the thorn that is found in Najd known as Sa'dān. The believers will then pass over it within the twinkling of an eye, like lightning, like wind, like a bird, like the finest horses and camels. Some will escape and be safe, some will be lacerated and let go, and some will be pushed into the fire of Hell." [Bukhāri & Muslim] As for the Ijmā', then this was relayed by An-Nawawi, may Allāh have mercy on him, who said: «وقد أجمع السلف على إثباته» "The Salaf were all agreed in affirming it (i.e. the Ṣirāṭ). [Sharḥ Muslim 182] 3. Who will cross the Ṣirāṭ? Sheikh Uthaymīn, may Allāh have mercy on him, explained that those who worshipped others besides Allāh will follow their false deities into Hellfire before the Ṣirāṭ is setup, so only the Muslims and the hypocrites will remain behind to cross the Ṣirāṭ; as reported by Bukhāri and Muslim in the lengthy ḥadīth of intercession. [Sharḥ Al-wasiṭiyyah] However, only the believers will manage to cross the Ṣirāṭ. As for the hypocrites, when they stand on the bridge, their light will be put out and they will end up falling into the blazing Fire, as Allāh ﷻ said:
