Lesson 21: Mistakes of Tarāwīḥ (part 1)
Mistake number 22:
Oftentimes, due to the long standing people get tired partway through Tarawih and decide to sit out, not knowing that they are allowed to offer voluntary prayers sitting down.
’Imrān ibn Ḥuṣayn raḍhiyallāhu ’anhu said: “I asked Allāh's Messenger (ﷺ) about the prayer of a man while sitting. He said, "If he prays while standing it is better and he who prays while sitting gets half the reward of that who prays standing; and whoever prays while Lying gets half the reward of that who prays while sitting.” [Bukhāri]
Although you only get half the reward when praying sitting down, it's still better than sitting out and losing out completely. So it's highly advisable that you consider this option before tapping out.
🔺Note: An-Nawawi raḥimahullāh explained: “This ḥadīth is referring to offering voluntary prayers sitting down with the ability to stand, in this case a person receives half the reward of one standing. But if one offers a voluntary prayer sitting down due to being unable to stand, his reward will not be deducted, rather it will be the same as standing. As for obligatory prayers, if someone prays sitting down while they are able to stand, the prayer is invalid, and it contains no reward, rather they are sinful for that.” [Sharḥ Muslims, explanation of ḥadīth Nu. 1214]
💡Benefit: Sheikh ’Uthaymīn raḥimahullāh mentioned that if someone prays sitting, then it's best to sit cross legged, but if that's too difficult, they can sit in any manner they feel comfortable. [Sharḥ Al-Mumti’ (4/461)]
