than the laws of inheritance and endowment - provided it comes out alive. However, some of the Salaf recommended to give Zakātul Fiṭr on their behalf.
➢ 7. Is it permissible to give Zakātul Fiṭr on behalf of other people; like friends and distant relatives? Yes, but they must be informed beforehand so they can make the intention, as “actions are judged by their intentions.” [Bukhāri & Muslim] ➢ 8. What is Zakātul Fiṭr given as? Most of the scholars have said that Zakātul Fiṭr may be given from the common Staples of the country; dates, barley, raisins, wheat, or any other type of Staples, based on the statement of the Prophet ﷺ: ((أو صاعا من طعام)) “...or one Ṣā‘ of foodstuff.” Sheikhul Islām raḥimahullāh said: “The Prophet ﷺ specifically mentioned giving one Ṣā‘ of dates or one Ṣā‘ of barley as Zākatul Fiṭr because this was the main source of sustenance for the people of Madīnah. Had this not been their main source of sustenance, and had there been an alternative source, the Prophet ﷺ would have instructed them to give Zakātul Fiṭr from that instead. In the Same way, Allāh did not instruct people to give from a specified selection of food with regards to expiation (Kaffārah), and Zakātul Fiṭr is likewise a form of expiation which is connected to a person's limbs - contrary to the monetary Zakāh which is connected to wealth.” So the correct opinion is that it is valid to give Zakātul Fiṭr from any type of Staple, although it's better to give from the Staples that are commonly used in that country. ➢ 9. How much must be given per person? Based on the above evidences, one Ṣā‘ is the standard amount given for all Staples, including flour, as is the view held by most of the scholars. • 1 Ṣā‘ = 4 Mudds • 1 Mudd = 1 double-handful of an average sized man. • Therfore, 1 Ṣā‘ = 4 double-handfuls 🔺Note: Ṣā’ is a measure of volume, not weight! For this reason, Sheikh Yaḥyā ḥafidhahullāh said it's better to measure 4 double-handfuls manually, or to use a standardised measure equal to one Ṣā’; in Yemen they use 5 fills of an empty pineapple can. In Madīnah they use this -> (https://t.me/madrasatuna/2336). This method is better than using a standard weight, like 3kg; because the weight varies from one Staple to another; some weigh heavier than others. ➢ 10. Is it permissible to exceed the required amount when giving Zakātul Fiṭr? A person must not do this as a precautionary measure for his worship to be accepted, because the Sharī‘ah has prescribed a specific amount. But whoever exceeds the specified measure with the intention of voluntary charity, then this is permissible. It is okay to increase voluntarily. For example, if someone is required to give two thirds of a bag of rice, but they opt to give a whole bag voluntarily, there is nothing wrong with this, and this method of giving extra, voluntarily avails many people from having to calculate the exact amount; all they do is give an extra amount with the intention of voluntary charity. But whoever is not able to do must use the Prophetic Ṣā’. ➢ 11. Is it permissible to give Zakātul Fiṭr as monetary funds? This is not allowed according to most of the scholars, because the Sharī‘ah has specified that it be given as food. They had gold and silver coins in those times, so the Prophet ﷺ could have easily instructed them use this, but instead he instructed to give food, and this was the practice during his lifetime and throughout the era of the rightly guided Caliphs raḍhiyallāhu ‘anhum. This is the verdict given by our contemporary scholars, such as Imām Albānī, Ibn Bāz, Al-'Uthaymīn, Al-Wādi'ē, the Lajnah Ad-Dā'imah (the permanent Committee for scholarly research and Iftā') and others. 🔺Note: If the poor person is in need money, they can simply sell the food. ➢ 12. Who are the recipients of Zakātul Fiṭr?
