Last lesson we discussed the virtues of fasting in a general sense. In this lesson, by Allāh's permission, we are going mention some of the virtues related to Ramaḍhān specifically.
Virtues of Ramaḍhān
1. Ramaḍhān houses one of the five pillars of Islām
2. The Qur'ān was revealed in Ramaḍhān. [Sūrah Baqarah: 185]
💡Benefit: Ramaḍhān is the only month mentioned in the Qur'ān by name
3. It contains a night (Laylatul Qadr) that is better than a thousand months.[Sūrah Al-Qadr: 3]
4. Ramaḍhān is a blessed month. [An-Nasā'ee - graded 'Ṣaḥīḥ' by Sheikh Albāni]
5. The devils are shackled and the rebellious jinns are restrained
6. The gates of Hellfire are closed shut
7. The gates of Paradise are left open
8. People are freed from Hellfire every night in Ramaḍhān
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “On the first night of Ramadhān, the devils are shackled, the rebellious jinns are restrained, the gates of Hellfire are shut such that no gate is left opened. The gates of Paradise are opened such that no gate is left closed, and a caller calls: 'O seeker of good; come near! O seeker of evil; stop! For there are those whom Allāh frees from the Fire.' And that occurs every night.” [Tirmithi - graded 'Ṣaḥīḥ' by Sheikh Albāni]
9. ‘Umrah performed in Ramadhān is equal to Ḥajj (in terms of reward)
Allāh's Messenger ﷺ said to Umm Sinān Al-Anṣāriyyah: “When Ramadhān comes, perform ‘Umrah; for 'Umrah in this [month] is equal to Ḥajj.” [Bukhāri & Muslim]
In another report, he ﷺ said:
“’Umrah in Ramadhān is equivalent to performing Ḥajj with me." [Bukhāri & Muslim]
🔻Note: This does not absolve a person from performing Ḥajj
10. There are many opportunities within Ramaḍhān for one's sins to be forgiven. The Prophet ﷺ said:
- “Whoever stands [in prayer] during Ramaḍhān with [sincere] Faith and hoping for reward [from Allāh], all his past sins will be forgiven.”
- “Whoever stands [in prayer] in Laylatul Qadr with [sincere] Faith and hoping for reward [from Allāh], all his past sins will be forgiven.”
- “Whoever fasts Ramaḍhān with [sincere] Faith and hoping for reward [from Allāh], all his past sins will be forgiven.”
🔻Note: This does not include major sins because the Prophet ﷺ said: “The five (obligatory) prayers, one Friday prayer to the (next) Friday prayer, and from Ramaḍhān to Ramaḍhān are expiations for the (sins) committed in between (their intervals) provided one abstains from major sins.” [Muslim]
