BENEFIT 30: The meaning of ٌسُلْطَان in the Qur'ān
Sheikh Ju'mān Laḥmar ḥafidhahullāh said:
«كل "سلطان" في القرآن فمعناه حجة وبرهان. جاء عن ابن عباس وغيره».
“Every 'Sulṭān' in the Qur'ān means: Proof and evidence. This (Tafsīr) was reported from Ibn ’Abbās and others.” [end quote]
Note:
'Sulṭān' is mentioned 37x in the Qur'ān, and for the most part Ibn Abbās' Tafsīr is pretty clear, except for the saying of Allah:
{هَلَكَ عَنِّي سُلۡطَٰنِيَهۡ}
[Surah Al-Hâqqah: 29]
Al-Baghawi mentions 2 different Tafsīrs:
1. ضَلَّتْ عَنِّي حُجَّتِي (عَنْ أَكْثَرِ الْمُفَسِّرِينَ)
Similar Tafsir as ibn ’Abbās
2. وَقَالَ ابْنُ زَيْدٍ: زَالَ عَنِّي مِلْكِي وَقُوَّتِي.
Dominion & strength
If you look at Muhsin Khan and Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali's translation of this Ayah, you find that they did well to combine both meaning:
”My power and arguments (to defend myself) have gone from me!”
May Allāh have mercy upon them.
