BENEFIT 21: Linguistic definition Vs. legislative definition Sheikh ’Uthaymeen raḥimahullāh mentioned: «...وله تعريف في اللغة أعم من تعريفه في الاصطلاح، وهكذا جميع الكلمات والحقائق التي لها حقائق لغوية وحقائق شرعية، تجد أن الحقائق اللغوية أوسع من الحقائق الشرعية، إلا في بعض كلمات كالإيمان مثلاً، فهو في اللغة محله القلب، لأنه إقرار القلب بالشيء، لكن في الشرع أعم، إذ يشمل قول الإنسان، وعمل الجوارح بالإضافة إلى إقرار القلب وهذا نادر، لكن الأكثر أن تكون المعاني اللغوية أوسع من المعاني الشرعية». “...Its linguistic definition is broader than its legislative definition, and the same with every word which has a linguistic and a legislative reality/definition; you find that the linguistic definition is broader than the legislative definition, EXCEPT in few words, like Ēmān for example. Linguistically, Ēmān exists (only) in the heart; because it is the heart's affirmation of something. Whereas the legislative definition is broader; as it encompasses utterance of the tongue, actions of the limbs, together with affirmation of the heart, which is rare; because linguistic definitions are generally broader than legislative definitions.” [Sharḥ Al-Mumti’ (8/95)]
