BENEFIT 12: Too much Nahu can get you into trouble โ–ช๏ธBackground: Al-Mutawaffฤซ (ุงู„ู…ุชูˆูู‘ููŠ with a yaa) -> the One Who causes death (i.e. Allฤh). The 'Awaam (laymen) in most Arabic countries mistakenly use this word to mean 'deceased', whereas the correct word for deceased is Al-Mutawaffฤ (ุงู„ู…ุชูˆูู‘ูŽู‰ with an Alif). โ€‹ โ–ช๏ธSad story: One of the linguists said: โ€œAs I was walking past one day I saw a funeral procession and then I heard a man asking: Who is the Mutawaffi (ุงู„ู…ุชูˆูู‘ููŠ with a yaa)? I said to him: Allฤh the Almighty, so I was beaten until I almost died.โ€ [Durratul Ghawฤแนฃ P. 290] โ–ช๏ธMoral of the story: Beware of flexing your Arabic skills in front of the 'Awaam ____ Additional benefit (credit to Jamal Al-Jamaiki แธฅafidahullฤh) Sheikh Bakr ibn 'Abdillฤh Abu Zayd mentions in his glossary of verbal prohibitions (492): ูˆููŠ ู‚ูˆู„ู‡ ุชุนุงู„ู‰: ๏ดฟ ูˆูŽุงู„ู‘ูŽุฐููŠู†ูŽ ูŠูุชูŽูˆูŽูู‘ูŽูˆู’ู†ูŽ ู… โ€œThere are two Qirฤ'ah (ways of reciting) with respect to the statement of Allฤh Almighty: {ูˆูŽุงู„ู‘ูŽุฐููŠู†ูŽ ูŠูุชูŽูˆูŽูู‘ูŽูˆู’ู†ูŽ ู…ูู†ู’ูƒูู…} 'And those of you who who dieโ€ฆ'; (1) the passive voice (mabni lil majhool) -> ูŠูุชูŽูˆูŽูู‘ูŽูˆู’ู†ูŽ (2) the active voice (mabni lil ma'loom) -> ูŠูŽุชูŽูˆูŽูู‘ูŽูˆู’ู†ูŽ meaning, to fulfil one's lifespan, as mentioned by An-Naแธฅแธฅฤs and others. So it's correct to use ุงู„ู…ุชูˆูู‘ููŠ in reference to the deceased if the meaning intended is ุงุณุชูŠูุงุก ุงู„ุฃุฌู„ - fulfilling one's lifespan. But with that said, Sheikh Al-Albฤni raแธฅimahullฤh states: ูู„ุงู†ูŒ ุชูŽูˆูŽูู‘ูŽู‰: ุฃูŠ ุงุณุชูˆูู‰ ุฃุฌู„ูŽู‡. โ€œ โ€œSo and so Tawaffฤ (ุชูŽูˆูŽูู‘ูŽู‰ ููู„ุงู†ูŒ), meaning: ุชูŽูˆูŽูู‘ูŽู‰ ุฃุฌู„ูŽู‡ - he fulfilled his lifespan, and better than this is the expression: ูู„ุงู†ูŒ ุชูŽูˆูŽูู‘ูŽุงู‡ู ุงู„ู„ู‡ู 'Allah caused so and so to pass away', this is better because the first expression may be confused/misunderstood, and using confusing speech is not from the ettiquettes of Islam. It also needs to be interpreted (to make sense), and there's no need to use interpreted speech as long as there's alternative expressions that are sound. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: โ€œDo not speak with words for which you have to apologise among the people. [Silsilah Al-Hudฤ wa An-Nลซr (Tape. 92, part 1, title: ุญูƒู… ุงู„ุฃุฐุงู†)]
