Q: Is it permissible for a woman to dye the hair on her head with black color? A: It is not permissible for a woman or others to dye white hair with black dye, according to the Prophet's saying, "Change this grey hair but avoid black color." (Related by Muslim in his Sahih) There is no harm in using dyes other than black or to add henna to the black color so that it does not appear black but a color between black and red. [Majmoo ‘al-Fataawa Ibn Baaz, Vol.: 10; pg. 53] __ Q3: What is the degree of authenticity of the Hadiths on dying beards black? Dying beards black is widely spread among some people known as religious men. A: There are many Sahih (authentic) Hadiths in this point, the most common of which is the story of the father of As-Siddiq, which was related by Muslim in his Sahih on the authority of Jabir Ibn ‘(رضی اللہ عنه) that when the Prophet (ﷺ) saw that the hair and beard of the father of As-Siddiq were like the Thaghamah (a mountain plant whose leaves and flowers are intensely white) due to their whiteness, he (ﷺ): "Change these (hair and beard) with another color, but avoid black." According to another narration, the Prophet (ﷺ) said: do not dye it with a black color. Also, the Hadith of Ibn ‘Abbas which was narrated by Ahmad, Abu Dawud and An-Nasa’i through a sound Sanad (chain of narrators) on the authority of Ibn ‘Abbas (رضی اللہ عنھما) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "At the end of time (of life on earth), there will appear those who dye their hair black like the corps of pigeons. They will not smell the scent of Paradise." This is a severe warning. The are other Hadiths that indicate the prohibition of dying hair black and the permissibility of dying it with different colors.
