Sheikh Abu Bilal hafidahullah said:
اللي (الذي) ما يعرفك ما يثمنك
'He who does not know you will not value you'
This proverb which is commonly used by the laymen has a basis in the Sharī‘ah:
The Prophet (ﷺ) passed by a woman who was weeping beside a grave. He told her to fear Allah and be patient, but she told him to, “go away, for you have not been afflicted with my calamity.” That is because she did not recognise him. When she was informed that he was the Prophet (ﷺ), she went to the house of the Prophet (ﷺ) and apologised, explaining that, “I did not recognise you.”
