Narrated Ibn Umar: Once Umar gave a horse in charity to be used in Jihad. It had been given to him by Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). Umar gave it to another man to ride. Then Umar was informed that the man put the horse for sale, so he asked Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) whether he could buy it. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) replied, “You should not buy it, for you should not take back what you have given in charity.” [Sahih al-Bukhari, 2775] During his explanation of this hadeeth, Sheikh Jum'an mentioned the following benefits: 1⃣. سَبَّلَهُ: إذَا أَوْقَفَ شَيْئًا فِي سَبِیلِ اللهِ The verb سَبّلَ means to donate something in Allah's Cause 2⃣. The impermissibility of one buying back something which they had donated in Allah's Cause; due to the Prophet ﷺ's statement, ((لاَ تَبْتَعْهَا)) - don't buy it! 3⃣. The permissibility for one to sell something which had been given to them as a donation; due to ibn Umar's saying,' يَبِيعُهَا' (he was selling the horse). From time to time some of the poor students get some assistance in the form of rice, flour, dates, etc., so the Sheikh jokingly reminded the students that it's permissible for them to sell their monthly ration if they wish to do so on the basis of this hadeeth. 4⃣. The verb باع (and its derivatives) is an example of an auto-antonym (see link: https://t.me/madrasatuna/1306). This hadeeth is a good example, because the same verb is used to express opposite meanings, i.e. يبيعها - he was SELLING it لا تبتعها - Don't BUY it __ Bukhari class, After Maghrib 27/4/1444H (27/11/22) Seiyun, Yemen Note: Sheikh Jum'an Lahmar hafidahullah is from the scholars of Yemen.
