Are we allowed to consume food or drink that was left uncovered over night?

Jaabir ibn 'Abdillah radhiyallahu anhu reported:
“We were with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and he asked for water. A person said: Allah's Messenger, may we not give you Nabeedh (a fermented drink) to drink? He (ﷺ) said: Yes. He (the narrator) said: Then that person went out speedily and brought a cup containing Nabeedh, whereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: Why did you not cover it? - even with a wooden stick. He said that THEN HE DRANK IT.” [Muslim 2011]
Abul 'Abbas Al-Qurtubi rahimahullah commented:
“And his (ﷺ) act of drinking from the vessel that had been left uncovered is evidence showing that it is neither forbidden nor disliked to drink something that was left exposed and uncovered overnight.”
[Al-Mufhim, The book of drinks, Hadeeth 2010]

Sheikh 'Uthaymeen rahimahullah was asked the following question:
Question:
I heard that a disease descends on one of the nights, this is why the Prophet ﷺ commanded us to cover the pots or turn them over. Is this correct? And if a person forgets and leaves the vessel open at night, is he allowed to eat from it or not? Give us an answer may Allah reward you.
Answer:
Yes, it is true that during the year there is a night in which a disease descends from the sky, from which only the covered vessel is safe, and that is why the vessel should be covered, even with a stick. As for turning them over, I don't know of any evidence to prove this, but turning them over suggests it is empty. I don't know if there is any evidence in this regard. However, placing something over it will protect it from what may happen. But if one forgets, they is allowed to eat the food (contained therein); because the Prophet ﷺ did not forbid eating food that was left uncovered, and because we do not know which night this is, it may be this night or the night before or after it.
