If fasting the day of 'Arafah expiates two years worth of sins; the previous and the coming, why do we need to fast 'Ashura?
Imaam An-Nawawi rahimahullah said:
If someone said: “If wudhu expiates [sins], what does prayer expiate? And if prayer expiates [sins], what will Jumu'ah and Ramdhan expiate? Similarly, fasting the day of 'Arafah is an expiation for two years, while fasting the day of 'Ashura is an expiation for one year?”
The answer is as the scholars have mentioned: that each of the aforementioned is an independent form of expiation; so if any minor sins are present it will expiate it, but if there are no minor or major sins to expiate, a person will have good deeds recorded for them and they will be raised in ranks; such is the case with those prayers, fasting, ablution and other acts of worship performed by the Prophets, the righteous, and the young children. And in the case where there is one or more major sin present, without the presence of any minor sins, then we hope that it will reduce the major sin. [end quote]
