▪️So we have to fast the entire month like Ramadhan?
▫️No! It's recommended to fast as much as you can.
▪️What if I can't?
▫️If you can't increase in fasting, then you should at least fast on the 9th and 10th on this month, which will be on Sunday and Monday respectively.
▪️What's so special about these two days?
▫️Fasting the 10th of Muharram, also known as 'Aashooraa', is highly recommended. The Prophet said concerning its fast, “I hope that Allah will accept it as an expiation for (the sins committed in) the previous year.” [Muslim]
▪️What about the 9th?
▫️Fasting the 9th of Muharram, also known as Taasoo'aa, is in order to distinguish ourselves from the Jews; when the Prophet ﷺ fasted the 10th and instructed others to observe fast, his Companions said to him: “Messenger of Allah, it is a day which the Jews and Christians hold in high esteem.” Thereupon the Prophet ﷺ said: “Next year, Insha'Allah, we will fast on the 9th (along with the 10th).” But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died before the advent of the next year. (Reported by Muslim)
So do your best to fast on Sunday and Monday.
▪️Insha'Allah
