NINTHLY: The Takbirs during the 'Eid Salah

9 July 2022 • 2.8K views
In the first rak'ah there are seven Takbirs including the opening Takbir (Takbiratul Ihram), and in the second there are five Takbirs including the transitional Takbir based on the hadith of 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet ﷺ said: “The Takbir during 'Eidul Fitr is seven times in the first rak'ah and five times in the second, and the recitation is after them both.” [Narrated by Abu Dawood (1151) - and it is 'hasan li ghayrihi'] As for including the opening and transitional Takbirs in the count, then this was established from Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, as can be found in the 'Musannaf' Ibn Abi Shaybah (2/173). As for raising the hands during the 'Eid Takbirs then this has not established from the Prophet ﷺ aside from the opening Takbir; this is the madh-hab of Malik and Ath-Thawri. Likewise, there is no Dhikr between each Takbir, and it has not relayed from the Prophet ﷺ that he used say a Dhikr after each Takbir; this is the madh-bah of Malik, Al-Awza'i and Abu Hanifa, and it is the view chosen by Ibnul Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on them. And the 'Eid Takbirs are Sunnah. They are not obligatory, so the prayer is not invalidated if one's leaves them off deliberately or forgetfully; there is no difference of opinion amongst the scholars regarding that as transmitted by Ibn Qudamah in Al-Mughni (3/275).
